I guess they don't have Porsches in China?

Yesterday when I was at the harbor they were unloading fish from a boat. A Chinese fish monger guy came up to my car and kept staring and staring. He asked me in broken English what brand it was (apparently he didn't see the big "PORSCHE" across the side, or perhaps he can't read).

Anyway, when I told him it was a Porsche, he said he'd never heard of that brand and asked if it was an American company.

He was stunned to find out that it's a 42 year old car. He said that in China they don't allow cars more than 10 years old, and that there are no good mechanics there. I've never been there, so can't vouch for his statements.

Oh, I showed him the front trunk... no motor. Back trunk... no motor. He stared in puzzlement for a bit, then leaned over and lifted the rear trunk carpet and the look on his face was amazing when there was no motor there either!

Drove to work today (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

It was 1 degree this morning at my house. One. Coldest I can recall in 20 years living here in VA. But the car ran like a champ and the heater even worked. Sort of.

Geez, Mike, is that you with that big ol' snapper? Good looking fish...

Worked on the two mid-engine mistresses. Changed front rotors and changed gear oil in the 914 and waxed the 981.

Had a few hours to play with the 'BB' yesterday. In addition to getting the steering column housing out, I also pulled the gauge dash loose to see how big of a nightmare changing the gauges would be.

Attached Image

I never liked the plastic gauge panel on the 'late' cars and had picked up a rusty metal one a few years ago. Located it, sanded and primed it yesterday, then sanded it down again today. Now I have to decide what color to paint it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) ... flat or semi-gloss black? ... or maybe silver hammer-tone? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I might finally get around to installing the silver-dot gauges that Timothy worked his LED upgrade magic on (well over a year ago) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Attached Image

For some reason, I decided to dig up some of the sound deadener tar from the pedal area. YIKES (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yikes.gif) ... looks like I need to treat some rusty metal.

Attached Image

With many events coming up real soon, I don't have time to tear up the entire floor, so I'll just deal with the pedal area for now.

pulled the alternator (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif)
the toughest part was screws on the tins. Bought a short, big, fat flathead screwdriver for a nasty one and it worked great. Best remedy for a frustrating repair is to buy a new tool (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Woke up early and went to cars and coffee in Blackhawk. Got there at 7:45 and parking was already filling up. There were about 200 cars and 3 914's. Nolan and I went into the museum and were disappointed that the top level has now been changed to a old west and American Indian display and no longer cars. It seems that they have dropped the automotive off the title of the museum and it is now The Blackhawk Museum rather than The Blackhawk Automotive Museum. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Hey Mark,
Sorry I didn't see this earlier.
Been continuing to put the interior back together with a few new seals here and there, filled and bled the brakes and need to make sense out of the e-brake adjustment procedure.
And, JUST TODAY, dropped the engine out of my original (now my donor) and removed all the shifting hardware to be transferred to the 72. I guess once I install the shift linkage and get the electrical sorted I really wont have an excuse to not have a running car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
No pics today of the 72, but Pics are of the rust in my soon to be up for sale 74 roller

Hows the rest of the car coming along, Steve?
If your referring to my beast, my life is on hold due to a detached retina. Two laser eye surgerys later, it's now slowly healing.
I was told no lifting, bending, etc for several weeks now. I am so close to getting my car running. I was hoping to drive it to the Phoenix club, car show and swap meet, but that ain't going to happen again.
Holy moly, Steve (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) How'd that happen? Hang in there ... and hope to see you at the Phoenix Club (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I was asking the other Steve (pneuhyde) - he bought my '72 5-lug roller back in 2013 and last time he posted some pix, it was shaping up nicely.

OK, I have the keys to the 'BB' in my hand, so let's see what I can get done today (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well, on to some other tasks, while waiting for the 'Rust Reformer' paint in the driver's foot-well area to dry).

Attached Image

Final coats on the metal gauge dash panel, the steering column housing and the spokes on some sort of French steering wheel I had laying around.

Attached Image

Located Timothy's LED gauges so I'll get those installed and wired-up shortly.

Attached Image

Also ran across a set of Morph's foot-well speaker enclosures (with nice Blaupunkt speakers in 'em) that I bought from Kevin (rhodyguy) a few years ago. Took them apart to clean up, and gave the enclosures a fresh coat of paint as well. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)
