We met out in Orange for coffee, a little drive through the back canyons/twistys, and breakfast BS session at Ruby's Diner in Laguna Beach. There were 4 /6 cars of different sorts, a V8 conversion, (all very fast cars) and two (one was mine) 1.7s bringing up the rear. What a great morning!!!

Looks like Aliso Creek. Nice meeting of the minds at LB Ruby's. I am now on a hunt for the next bigger thing..........but until I can surpass my C4S in power and, well, power...., I will continue to morph the 914..

Test fit- finally in the car! One down one to go. That seat looks great! Last weekend I got the car completely stripped down. Dropping the suspension and removing the rusty rocker panels this coming weekend. Then it's off to media blasting! Also decided to NOT go with the Audi V8. After tearing it down found that it would not be worth the hassle. So, out it goes and now I'm shopping for another motor! |

Daughter found an '02 Jetta TDI she wanted... 4 hours away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
We had the option of driving her Kia without a/c via the interstate OR take the 914 and a more adventurous route via Foothills Parkway and the Dragon. Yep, she chose the 914 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Of course, the chosen route ended up taking over 5 hours but that included a short stop to visit with Jake Raby. (Thanks for the fuse). He has my 2056 in the build stage and I hope to have it in time to install for Okteenerfest (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) Met the seller of the Jetta in Lawrenceville and, after the paperwork was done and money handed over, we headed home - this time via I-75. The TDI did great and my 914, well... made it home. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Roundtrip was over 400 miles and nearly 10 hours of drive time. Not bad for a tired engine that used 3 qts of oil (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

I don't know about TDIs, but the gasoline engines in the 'newer' VWs burn oil as well - not as much as your tired T4, but even the owners manual says 1qt./1k mikes is acceptable (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Make sure she checks the dip-stick every other fiil-up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)
The only time I ever need to add oil in my Toyotas is when I do a complete oil change (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Ordered a trickle charger for the battery ... Battery Tender? That kept the AGM battery in my '98 Harley alive for 12 years! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

Stopped at an Advance Auto and bought a jug of oil for the trip home. Added a couple quarts. Haven't had a chance to see how much was lost. Our '05 TDI doesn't use much oil if any between changes. IIRC, in the 914 manual, the acceptable oil usage stated is something like 1 qt per 1000 miles. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

IIRC, in the 914 manual, the acceptable oil usage stated is something like 1 qt per 1000 miles. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) I had heard that also. So when I saw some blue smoke on startup week before last, I checked my oil level. But since I had just changed the oil, it was too clean to see on the dipstick. So I added a quart to be sure. And then I drove it for 1200 miles. Still too clean, but it looked low. So during another 1200 mile weekend I added a 2nd quart (2700 miles since the change). And now that the oil is dirty enough to see on the dipstick, I am two centimeters above the top mark on the dipstick. No oil burn whatsoever, nor any oil drip-age. Engine rebuilt by PO about 25K ago. How bad is it to overfill oil by two quarts? Should I drain off the excess? Or just wait a couple more weekends (2500 miles hi way) and change the oil then? |

Rebuilt my side shift console - replaced the seals and bushings - ready for project 'Transmeggedon' at the weekend (which in English involves me installing the tangerine firewall bushing and shift linkage, and, while I'm in there and have the tranny drained, replacing the speedo drive with a new double seal one from 914rubber and the diff output shaft seals in an effort to stop my tranny leaking like, well, me after 8 beers).

Yeah, no... get that oil out of there ASAP! All kinds of bad things besides smoking, excess cavitation in the oil pan and all sorts of oil going where it's not supposed to go. Possible engine damage if you drive it too far- maybe I'm exaggerating, but only slightly. |
