Hey Andy! Did you check the condition of your alternator as well? Nope, i'm pretty sure it's not the alternator. I simply don't drive the car enough (less than 10 minute commute). I forgot to disconnect the battery over the winter and it drained completely. I was never able to get it to hold a good charge after that. Btw., Optima replaced it under warranty free of charge! Removed the front BUB to start body work. Man that was heavy. Would like to go with fiberglass replacement. Recommendations" I did an AIR rear fiberglass bumper, local for us in L.A. Lucky I have a shop so I could spend 3 days modifying it to fit (perfect accident free car) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) You would think that they would include some custom rubber dogbones with the package...in order to fit their caddywhompus bumper. Whatever co. that you decide to buy from, ask about their defect-return policy. A-I-R supplies many mail order co.'s, so make sure you know where it's made. There must be other/better sources out there. Nice grille work by the way (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

The wrist-pin puller worked great. I think I can shorten the PVC tube by an inch or more and cut down the all-thread's length too ... also going to get a Nylock nut for the tail end. Don't think I'm going to need this again for a while though.
* (Note: I edited my previous post (6492) to correct the PVC pipe and all-thread's final dimensions) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif) While I was cleaning up the front of the case a little more (and preparing to pull the oil pump), couldn't help but notice this threaded plug. I'm going to take it as concrete evidence that this motor has been out of the car and worked on at some point after leaving the factory (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) Removed all the case nuts, through bolts and the oil pump, then inserted the case splitter ... ... and separated the case halves (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) Rods have a little slop and the cam lobes have seen better days (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) ... Cam drive gear looks great though. I'll be running all the parts (along with a set of 911L P & Cs) up to EMW for a more thorough evaluation soon ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) |

Notice anything missing? ... there's no windage plate in here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
Did early (71) 1.7L motors have them? (this is my first 1.7L autopsy) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Found a lot of gray metallic sludge on the inside of strainer plate too. This isn't a good sign (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) Oh well ... I cleaned the fuch out of it and gave it a fresh coat of hi-temp paint (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) That's all for now ... |

Left rear wheel well was showing its 42 years on the road so I cleaned and painted it. Those runs are factory, not mine! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Missed a few spots! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Stopped by the track just out driving and saw the Gainsco Red Dragon. They were fine tuning the driver. See the 914 roofline next to the 18 wheeler. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) And I got in a couple hours of driving in the country! Wahoo.

I spent 6 hours grinding welds trying to get the suspension ties off without damaging the outer suspension console. I got the little one off, but the bigger one is being stubborn. I was hoping to have them and the inner suspension console off today...
