Added Superbright LED brake/tail lights https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/ta...trofit-car/814/ for a whopping $40 for two. Instant-on brake lights and bright. What I like about them is the look is stock, but brighter and much faster to deploy.

Went for a drive on some country back roads. Cracked the windscreen in the middle.
Going to be fun for the insurance company to find a replacement here in Australia. Any ideas what would cause a break in the middle? I'm thinking old hard butyl. Was also 40 degrees C |

Why do they say helmets are only good for 5 years from the date first worn? http://www.smf.org/standards/sa/2015/SA2015releaseNotes.pdf They get smelly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Let's put it another way, Jason ... Alan and Bill each buy a new helmet. Alan wears his helmet almost every day on his motorcycle commute to work. Bill wears his helmet five times a year - to AX his car. Over the course of five years, Alan wears his helmet more than 300 times, whereas Bill only wears his helmet about 25 times in the same period. Besides the fact that Bill's helmet might smell nicer, it's been used minimally. Alan's helmet has been used 12x the amount of time, so why would both of their helmets be considered unsafe? I 'snell' a rat (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Not quite, some more context: Alan and Bill each buy 4 new tires Alan drives his car to work each day a few miles, accumulating 10K miles per year Bill puts the tires on his car and parks it outside, driving it once per year to autocross At the end of 5 years, Alan's tires are worn down and fully consumed, time for new ones At the end of 5 years, Bill's tires have sat and dried out - they have all their tread left but also need to be replaced. The combination of time, sun, temperature and humidity changes, etc make them cross a threshold where we'd consider them "safe". Even if Bill's particular tires are still good, we need a way to say, "tires that are older than X months are no longer safe enough for track use as our general rule". Now also consider Charlie - he has a set of New-Old-Stock original 914 165-R15 tires that have been sitting in a temperature and humidity controlled vault, lovingly tended, and are conditionally identical to brand new tires. However, they are also outdated for an application like track driving - the technology is dated. So, we'd make a decision to say that Charlie's tires meet the functional spec for which they are designed, but the design spec has been replaced by higher quality radials and better rubber compounds in a modern tire. So, there may also be a date requirement on gear that goes to how "current" it is in the ever improving world of safety gear. (Harnesses and helmets have this in particular). Long story short - it's annoying (stipulated) to have to buy new gear when the old gear still feels good, but ask Dale Earnhardt Sr. about the value a modern helmet. |

December 26 went for a drive along the Coast... Cool 62 degrees, clear and sunny.
Car seems happy after adjusting the valves, rebuilt TB, and new Bursch muffler and SSi's. Attached image(s) |

Not quite, some more context: Again, my question relates to the 'after first worn' statement they made. I've never seen an expiration date on any helmets.Alan and Bill each buy 4 new tires Alan drives his car to work each day a few miles, accumulating 10K miles per year Bill puts the tires on his car and parks it outside, driving it once per year to autocross At the end of 5 years, Alan's tires are worn down and fully consumed, time for new ones At the end of 5 years, Bill's tires have sat and dried out - they have all their tread left but also need to be replaced. Long story short - it's annoying (stipulated) to have to buy new gear when the old gear still feels good, but ask Dale Earnhardt Sr. about the value a modern helmet. How much new technology are in 2015 helmets as compared to 2000 helmets? From what I've read, not much. As for Dale Earnhart's death, there's still some controversy regarding the actual cause, and focuses more on the harness installation. Also, the HANS restraint that NASCAR mandated aren't changes to the helmets design or construction. Regardless, even though well cared for and never damaged, my helmets are pretty old now - guess I'll have to get a new one ... but I won't be spending $600. + for the fancy graphics this go-around. |

I dug my original bus motor out from under the workbench in my old garage. I've had this engine for probably 25 years now, just waiting for a reason to build it. It came out of my 76 Chromium Yellow Westy and had a dropped valve. No other damage that I could tell (at that time). Happily the crank spins freely. I used the heads in a bus engine build years ago, so will need replacements. Trying hard not to spend all day looking at engine kits on Type IV Store, but it is difficult. Shall I go 2056, or 2270? Hmmmmmm... |

Stripped the interior in preparation for rust repairs to floor pan, and ready to install Mark's new 914Rubber dashpad when back from welder.
And off she goes, once again on the back of a flatbed... |

Then I changed the engine and transmission oils. 3K and 25K miles, respectively. The wooden blocks are safety backups to the cylinderr Jack stands, which are pretty fail safe. But I'll need the wooden ones if I ever go to the new rachet Jack stands after losing my mind. Or if I'm ever doing an oil change after (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) I'm working and happy to be after 7 months off... but if I could drive from San Jose to Santa Cruz whether to check out the surf or the calamari on the pier I'd do it in a heartbeat- love that drive! Gas tank out and sealed, wasn't has hard as I'd feared. Was going to put the SS lines in but figured I might as well wait until the car is painted first.

Drove it in the snow sitting 3 wide on the Livermore Porsche New Years drive. I'll be sad when Mikayla and Nolan get to big too sit this way. Even with little sleep last night, we still had a blast. Yeah, maybe a Panamera is in your future (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

Mine is zipped up in its storage bag for the winter (Chicago) and I'll see it by the middle of March. Very nice looking car. |
