... My wife doesn't like the thought of mothballs laying around because our dogs might eat them, so we use urinal cakes (the ones with the plastic 'splashguards') (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif)Oh, and I do believe that throwing a couple a few mothballs under your car during storage is a good thing. Vermin hate that. Oh, don't use those things. Elyut says they taste terrible. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Congrats! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) What other high mileage 914s are out there? I figure there should be some 300k and maybe 400k stories out there... Pikers.... Betty's car is at 370,000 plus miles and is still a daily driver. We take it to get groceries. |

Finishing the final shop closing bits and pieces ... one trailer load of parts to go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Will be moving the 'BB' home tomorrow or Thursday, and trying to carve out some time to get the hydraulic clutch thing happening. Dropping off my wife's '71 at the body shop on Friday ... minor body reshaping and then new paint. I removed bumpers, all the lights, the mirror, the trunk lock and 914 emblem this evening. Still need to remove the windshield trim, wiper assembly, squirters, door handles and the sail trim ... and horns and all them little round rubber thingies in the bottom of the bulkhead behind the front bumper. I disassembled the motor earlier in the year and have the parts staged to go to EMW for evaluation ... maybe next week (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) |

Got the valves adjusted, new points (third set in a year...), checked timing and dwell angle and an oil change. Runs great.

To be more clear, the first set I put on last year during the initial work I did on the car was heavily worn after about 10 months (and maybe 2,000 miles) and left me stranded. I could not determine the cause. The second set that was removed this week had a small "mountain" on the contacts so I just replaced them and the condenser for peace of mind. Am contemplating converting to electronic ignition at some point... |

Electronic is the way to go. Keep a-spare dizzy with points & condenser in the trunk as a back-up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Definitely go electronic but keep a spare pair of electronic for roadside repairs. I don't recommend carrying a set of points as a replacement unless you also carry a dwell meter and timing light with you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Today's task / putting in a new speedo cable / third one in the last few months...... routing issues I presume / Bruce Stone relayed a "trick" to run the cable up and over the axels to the upper bolt/nut location on the side of the tranny / then install a cale clamp of the proper diameter to that stud to keep the cable in check / and test the angle drive for ease of rotation. fyi
