Well we are officially off the road. Starting to take the 2056 out and readying to begin
the process of six installation. But we had a work stoppage. Looking toward front of car the Elkhound has laid down on the job. Attached thumbnail(s) |

I used contact cement, but I know that you can buy landau top cement too, on this car, I didn't care.

Packed up the campsite and headed out of town from car week in Monterey. Stopped at Retro Auto on the way out and Kathy got star struck by Leno. Car ran like a champ for the weekend. I was a little nervous as the battery took a dump the morning we were leaving home for track. Don't tell Kathy that her Bumblebee is now missing it's battery. Today I added one more final detail to my 71 restoration. A while back, I had the guys at Car-Bone make me a octane decal, and it finally got here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Turned out pretty good. I even tried to put it in the same location of the original. |

With some help from my friend Jim(who is shopping 914's for his own right now) we installed a fan on my new aux oil cooler, seems to be working great- took it for a drive. Had Jim drive it - host first time behind the wheel of a 914, and I do believe he is hooked!- so 90+ degrees 45 minute drive and with fan kicking in at about 200, temps stayed under 210-!which never happened with out the cooler and fan.

Working on renewing a mouse trashed blower motor and saw that the flapper door seals were as toasted as the motor, producing little to no sealing after 42 years.
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i723.photobucket.com-14731-1472477171.1.jpg) I thought it would be an easy layup for 914 rubber to come up with a solution. So I measured them up and was preparing to off a note to Mikey, when the layout sort of set off a light bulb, that plus wanting it done sooner rather than later. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i723.photobucket.com-14731-1472477172.2.jpg) I was thinking I could hit the local FLAPS and dig for a donut gasket of some sort then I recalled water pipe insulation I had used in my cellar. For 98 cents I hit up HD on came home with this. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i723.photobucket.com-14731-1472477172.3.jpg) A little trimming later I had this first trial fit...If your worried about slippage you could always use some adhesive. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i723.photobucket.com-14731-1472477172.4.jpg) The clamshell flaps have one side where the outer edge is tilted inward to really grasp the material. There is also a recess in the tin that is hard to see in the pics but it really helps set the foam in. Just really a matter of getting the thickness you want and how far to let it sit beyond the flapper edge. In my case the space between the flapper door and the case is not as great as you might think, so I had to pull the foam in a fair bit. HD also offers a rubberized insulating pipe for about $5 that I will use for the destroyed foam gasket between the blower motor housing and the outer air mixing box. We'll see how long it holds up... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i723.photobucket.com-14731-1472477173.5.jpg) No to find something better than Febreeze to kill the mouse smell! |

The car has had a no-start-when-hot issue I've been fighting for years--so far I've replaced the ignition switch (x3 from different vendors), the starter (Tilton), the battery (Optima red-top), the harness from the battery to the starter, ground strap above the transmission, cleaned all of the other connections, installed a Ford starter relay, etc., etc. For now, I've decided to modify the starter circuit. Fortunately, there's no cutting/drilling required--the new push-to-start switch is a nice fit in the hole where the lighter used to be. I used the lighter's +12v supply wire to the new switch, then ran a new wire from the switch to the starter relay along the original harness (bypassing the relay plate in the engine compartment in case that is part of the problem). I also added a wire from the original lighter supply wire to a new receptacle under the dash where I can plug in a 3xUSB for phone, ipod, etc. If it works as planned, I'll go back in and put in a SPDT relay with diode/resistor to avoid any current spikes. If it doesn't, I can change it back to the original configuration with no damage done--so I've got that going for me. There are a couple of other things I'm fixing (while I'm in there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) ), and I still need to get under the car to hook up the new wire. I hope to do the proverbial "press to test" tomorrow (maybe) . . . . |

Started on my street car's roll bar/cage. I want it to be tucked in as close as possible in all areas so I figured I'd give a go at roll bending the main hoop to match the contour of the targa bar. Roll a bit, test fit, roll a bit more. Looks good to me...!

I salvaged the vinyl from a wrecked car's inner door panel many years ago. I had used some on the dash back then. I re-did the dash in the picture a few months back when I put in a new radio. |

I did my best to remove all traces of grease and grime from recent Arizona, California and Nevada excursions. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/FERG.gif)
(I even put fresh duct tape on the cracked front valance.) My car is now a clean palette waiting for a coat of Utah and Colorado dust, dirt, and bug splatter. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Red Rock Classic, here I come. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dancinnanner.gif) |
