Voted for "73-914kid (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Not only did he build this car before he was 18 but he is a great diplomat of the 914s at a young age. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Thanks for the nomination. For anyone who is contemplating restoring or doing a conversion car, I can't say enough how rewarding it is. This SBC conversion has been on the road now for 3 years and I love it. These cars should have had a few hundred horsepower from the factory. This 75 came from Oregon and other than being a bit ugly LOL, some fender damage it was a great rust free candidate. The marathon blue metallic paint is beautiful in person but usually doesn't show well in photos, look at the difference the photo that did capture the blue.

Gotta go with Joe. Taken down to a bare tub and hand built with not a single bolt left untouched. Tons of one-off custom fabrication done along the way and oh, and it hauls ass.

I think these COTM contests are flawed. It seem like the real -6's usually get all the votes. Second would be a GT style fake -6 that would win if the real -6 is not nominated...

Are we biased?

BTW, all 5 are very nice cars.

Flawed COTM?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) Let me translate what you said. The reason real 6's get all the votes. Answer: Everyone wants a real 6 and that's why they win. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif)
Maybe the next COTM should have a special category only for
Real 6's?
GT- Fakes?
914-4's only?
Etc. Etc.
Problem solved (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

This is the same Six featured in Hemmings Sports & Exotics Feb. 2012 issue, with a small piece on a very original, 2 owner 71 914-6 Orange on Black on page 16 of HS&E. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

It's an as original 914-6 survivor that's being driven - a bit anyway! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

The topic I started on it & where the owner 71sixer posted more info & pix is here:

71sixer's story on this beauty -
<snipped>
Tom,

As requested, I have attached a couple of pictures of my recently acquired 1971 914-6.

I have owned a number of different Porsches, but never a 914-6. During the mid to late 1980's I had owned a 1976 914 that I loved, but eventually sold because it wasn't practicle as my daily driver.

The more I thought about acquiring a 914-6, the more the interest level grew. So, on a whim, I posted a WTB ad in Panorama saying that I was looking for a original numbers matching 914-6. I never really expected to get any serious leads. And actually got a few e-mails from current owner's that were contemplating selling their 914-6's, but when I pressed...........they backed off and withdrew their potential offer to sell. Then I heard from the person that owned the car I bought. I felt this might be too good to be true. Why would a original owner sell this car? Long story short, he and his wife were selling their home (6 car garage) to move into a Assisted Living facility and would no longer have a place to store the car. I bought the car sight unseen and haven't regretted one second. He included with the car the following: window sticker, original bill of sale, original owner's manual, tool kit, and many extra items like a complete set of Mahle gas burners, NOS distributor, extra targa top etc. The car drives as good as it looks. My wife allows me just one Porsche at a time, and I sold a 1987 Carerra with just 20,000 miles in pristine condition to buy the 914-6. Haven't regretted that either. Sure I would have liked to have held onto the 911, but my wife's wishes overruled that.

Have been really impressed with 914World and the level of interest and support!! Glad to be part of the community!

Tim

Tom,

Thanks for the nudge to post a few more pictures.

I took these two pictures just days after taking delivery of the car last June. The car needed a LOT of cleaning for lack of use and attention. I did clean and wax the exterior of the car before taking the picture, but had not yet gotten to the interior. I since have done quite a bit to spruce up the interior and make it look much nicer. I also replaced the 1990's blaupunkt radio with a period correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo AM/FM radio.

Will include a copy of the window sticker in my next post

I voted for "Speedster Mike" because of its' overall cleanliness and condition.
The engine bay is pristine and the interior is very well kept.

Its' overall execution is very good.

Yes, the six, is a six, for what it is...well, it's good, but it is neglected by
any other standards, (sixes owned by other people on this site).
It has a terrible front bumper top.
The dash material is embedded with dirt from one side to the other.
The carpet is old.
The cross-over air cleaner is missing stickers.
and the center stowage piece is damaged...etc, etc...
Another five or six grand, it could be better.

I agree Dave, but he's new to 914's (really a prior owner of a /4 years ago), and has only had the 914-6 for literally a couple of months, so it's still a work in progress after sitting in the PO's/original owner's garage for a few years with little use.

BTW - I've already referred him to sources for OEM/NOS & our fav repro bumper top source! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Dave, I really don't think critisizing the guy's car is called for ( I really don't like it in the Classified either). It's bad enough when "Real" Politicians do it with Negative Ads, but here, we should be supportive of each other & our cars.

I agree ...TC; however my words were not harsh, just pointed out why I didn't choose the 914/6. If someone wants to
leverage their chances with a six, then they should show more effort and clean the car first.
(...boy, I'm glad I held back the bad comments about the others !)
Maybe, the Car of the Month has moved from displaying the best effort...to "who knows who" or "friends of friends."
It was an effort to level the playing field. Photos of each entry were submitted for comparison and judgement...
If we ARE to be supportive of each other and our cars, then let's look at the details...and reward their hard work.

Offering a beautifully kept 1.7 should be on equal terms as a 914/6.

Once, I had a chance to look closely at a 916 and was sadly disappointed in the fit and execution.
The only thing that I enjoyed was the 190 HP 2.4S motor. The rest of the car seemed trite, and less than
it should have been. The real 916 is only a '72 /4 frame with a 2.4S motor.
I didn't know that "WE" were so...thin skinned.

If anyone here should be on the "Car of the Month" it should be the English guy that totally replaced the bottom six
inches of his car from scratch. Talk about effort, and dedication.

p.s. What Classifieds ? I didn't see that...

By Classifieds I meant when there is a Car For Sale and people rip to shreds.

You also have to remember that the People Nominated for COTM don't submit pictures to me. I Post a Thread for Nominations, Members nominated others ( No self-nominations accepted) with a picture. I take those pictures and put them in this Voting Thread. They can add other pictures later.

Again I would like these Voting Threads to be Positive. Remember this is a Popularity Vote not a Concours.

I would also add that it is about voting for the car AND the owner. Some cars will get the vote based on who owns it. However, many cars win simply because they are a kick ass car.

Dave,

I agree with your points...to an extent. But it needs to be kept in overall perspective of a truly original survivor vs. a full restoration, which is why PCA & others have separate classes for these and are judged accordingly and separately until Best of Show level.

Our COTM seems to lean more to the modified & restored 914s, than the originals - so it doesn't hurt to recognize a survivor in excellent condition now and again - whether /4 or -6!

BTW - I am a 73 914-2.0 long time owner & actually love the 73-74 2L /4s, and I LOVE Marathon Blue, so I LOVE the competition here! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

IMHO it takes as much dedication to upkeep over a long term - 42 years in this case, to keep an all original car in great shape, as to completely gut & replace/resto a car - any car - 914 or other.

In this case as the person originally nominating the 914-6, I thought it was an equal effort to the resto's typically nominated, due to the near pristine condition of the original Orange paint & upholstery - in spite of the need for a good cleaning & detailing, plus replacement and updating of certain missing & deteriorating parts.

However - as I pointed out in my prior post, this new guy has only acquired the car in Oct. `11 IIRC, and he's only had a chance to start catching up on those items needing attention from a 914 which has managed to survive 42 years in snowy/salted roads NH, and then sat in the garage relatively untouched/unused for a period of the more recent time building up dust, grime & a chance for the tin-worms to work on his bumper pads.

In any case, it's a remarkably well preserved example of a first MY 914 - whether it is a /4 or a -6, and should be judged/voted by everybody here based on that fact.

I'll point out that a few months back in 2011, Gustl's green original 70 914-6 was also voted COTM for it's survivor quality, even with a few warts which needed attended to, as have some other COTMs of both restored & modified flavors, as well as a few other survivor 914s.

You made your choice/vote & stated why, and I've stated why I felt the orange 914-6 was worthy of nomination as a survivor despite it's warts - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
...so now the voting continues..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)
