I'd like to know if anyone else with -6 linkage has seen this. The last
piece connected to the bar at the trans lever has 2 separate contacts/ movements, and even though I didn't see a wear pattern they were both pretty sloppy. Below I'll show what I did for this. The top channel contacts the ball of the trans lever. It has 18mils of slop in it but the ball doesn't look worn. I decided the easiest thing to do was glue in a 26-gauge brass shim with some 3M super90. Perfect fit now. Even if this wears within a year or two, it's very easy to re-do and I'm under the car a lot anyway. But the fork side of the piece has HUGE slop. About 75 mils. It actually looks like maybe somebody ground the opening wider because the casting is smooth and rounded everywhere else. So, this slop was taken basically to 0-5 mils by welding it and re-grinding. Sorry the pictures are only after being greased. It's still snowing here so I won't even get to feel for improvement for a while. Shim: Side view after welding: Rear view: |

I have some wear on that piece but I haven't addressed it yet. Please give us an update once you get a chance to drive. I'm not too far fom MA if you want to get together sometime in the spring...

Will work just fine but a stainless shim would last longer if you don't simply replace the pieces. That's a lot of pressure on the two contact points on the ball. The brass won't like it forever.

Well I've been driving the car a bit, and my verdict is:
meh Eliminating those gaps didn't seem to really change much. The car didn't shift poorly before though. |

The ball on mine was worn. . but I was able grab it with vise grips and turn it 90 degree. . I welded the other worn spots and machined them back to orig specs. .
All in all, it's a tailshifter and still has some play in it . |

Yup, I convert a lot of /6 to side shifter for this very reason (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Not hard. Keep the old parts for originality if you want to later.
