Well, the extensive 917 history redux doesn't say anything about the wiper. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Mercedes did it on several models in the 80-90's. Probably wouldn't be hard to adapt one of their setups if you could find one

I thought those single arm MB wipers worked with a cam to extend the sweep, rather than using pantograph action as seen on many racing Porches, Ferraris, etc.
My 1978 VW Scirocco had a single wiper arm and I never had a visibility problem in the rain with that car. It too was neat to watch that single blade clear the windshield so swiftly and effectively.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Correct, MB's wiper used an eccentric pivot. Had a '76 Scirocco (that I miss sometimes), for some reason they reverted to twin wipers.

904svo, care to post how you did your pantograph? Love the 904...

About the 917 and variants, can someone point to a website with a good pictorial history of the different versions of the car? The 917 has to be one of the most beautiful and successful sports cars ever.

I apologoze for the long winded post guys. I don't come out of the box much and I got the impression long winded pointless posts were the new thing here.

As for the wiper issue, this is something I had been planning on doing on my car if I ever start on it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) . Not a true pantograph, but pretty much exactly what the green meanie has. Was this the Benz setup ?

I was always a fan of the twin centre park wipers on the Alfa gtv's. seem to be a little more suited to a shorter wide windscreen

My MB E320 had the single cam wiper. It was strange at first, but worked well. Funny, my newer SL has dual wipers,

pantographs do a square pattern, for a narrow field of view, small windshields,
the 914 has a wider windshield and the center mount is more efficient.
Of course you have to ditch everything under the cowl to do it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Yes, you're probably right. The Mercedes monoblade had the best coverage of all the single wiper systems but it was big and heavy. Maybe someone can come up with a similar but simpler system for the 914?

The new Ford Escape has one wiper up front.

That just shows how wrong headed things are. The MGB had three wipers. Now that's class! Of course that is because the windscreen is so low you look over it with the hood (top) down.

Cool factor aside, why would people do this? I see it saving money on the econo box cars.

I do, however, need to do something like this on the rear hatch of the bus.
