my shifting started going out of adjustment this week. I couldn't get it into 4th. So, I readjusted, or tried for about an hour last night. Finally got it to go in all gears but then realized that I was having difficulty getting it in 1st and Reverse as well as difficulty getting it into 4th and 5th. So, somewhere in the rotational motion there is apparently LOTS of play. My main shifting links are all tight and bushings are all new. I am wondering if there is something working loose inside the tranny? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
I'm scrambling to put together the original 1.7l engine and tailshift tranny to put back in.

There was a thread here last week showing a slope at the shift console.

There is an access plate on the bottom of the tail you can remove and look at the shifter mechanism. It may have a sheared roll pin. I can send you another seal for the tail (free)

I have at least one full set of original tail shift bushings in Longmont.

I switched to a side shifter and already had all the parts for two restores.

I also have a tail shift that I just pulled the core to have a look, and a side shift core sitting out on the table right now.
I am waiting for the Dr's video (any day now) to put it back together.
You are welcome to come over and watch it once it gets here.

Sometimes my DVDs take a bit to get out as I burn copies in batches, not on an as needed basis. I just sold 30 copies, had to make 10 more. Yours went out a few days ago. With my new son, my time away from work is completely busy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks! Maybe we can have a NorCO Dr. Evil video watching party with two trannys available for examination. We could even have you dial on on a telecon and have a virtual beer with us ;-).

Anyway, on a related topic: I installed the short shift kit for the tail shifter (Al. plate under shifter, and a couple other parts I cannot remember).
When I change to the side-shifter, is there any reason to keep the short shift kit? Is it even compatible?

If not, it would be available for sale with the rest of my tailshift restoration parts.

Fixed! It turned out to be the pin at the U-joint at the firewall. This is a side shifter installed in a 72. I tapped the pin back in and put a hose clamp around the pin assembly. I also noticed while I was under the car that the shift rod was sitting clear at the top of the engine mounting brace hole. made 4th and 5th hard to engage. I put a pry bar in there and bent the shift rod a wee bit and she shifts SOOO easy now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Well, telling us you have a tail vs side is kind of important. Ya, that is where the problem would be on a side shifter. That part is not on a tail shifter. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Sorry, I was talking about two different engines and trannys...that probably didn't help.
