I read that the tie rod eye-bolt end (that goes into the steering rod) needs to be installed / aligned with a special tool or else....
I removed the old eye-bolt (right side) with steering still in car. I noted the position of the eye-bolt. It was pointed towards the rear. That said, I really don't see much else that makes it so "special". SO.... I put the new eye-bolt in, in about the same position and made sure the "lean" is towards the back. What I noticed when I took the old eye-bolt out, it was really hard to remove. What I notice now is that when I put the eye-bolt in, and connect the tie rod fork end, the eye bolt can easily be turned by hand - in either direction. There is a metal cap on the eye-bolt that the bellows connects to. Is that the piece that needs to put the tourque on that eye-bolt, or am I totally hosed at this point? |

Porsche had a special jig that the racks fit in. Eye bolts have to be canted at about 8 (?) degrees. If the eye bolt is NOT at the proper angle, the steering rack will bind. Yes, the metal cap has to be in place to act as a spacer.

Yes, the metal cap has to be in place to act as a spacer. The eye-bolt is already canted. The angle points toward the rear of the car. What I don't understand is what holds the eye-bolt in that position. The cap acting as a lock nut? |

I removed the eye-bolt with the steering still mounted on the car. I just took it off untill it came free of the inside bar - the cap still attached, then unscrewed the rest from the cap. Is there a hex bolt welded to the inside of that cap that I need to use to make it hold the eye-bolt in place? If not, how do you get the cap and eye-bolt tightened together? |

You need a Hook Spanner to tighten it. |
