Now I don't know this for sure, but am told it's a true story that happened to someone else. Someone else who I don't know and have never met so I'm sure it never happened. Well, there's the video, so there is that. The background: 914/WRX out cruising, lowered Honda boy taunts the little red 914, 914 demonstrates acceleration. Honda boy remembers something more important he had to do, disappears, is replaced by a Saleen Mustang who had witnessed the 914-Honda exchange from behind. Wow, a Saleen. A couple of years old, but still a Saleen. Saleen revs, 914 revs, they test their respective powers of acceleration and the Saleen is embarassed. Mustang guy has his girlfriend in the car, is reported to have looked "baffled," so they try it again, with the same results. 914 driver asks Saleen driver, "Is that really a Saleen?" Embarassed Mustanger affirms "Yeah, it is" So the 914 driver asks "Are you sure?" Amazingly, fistfight does not ensue, drivers talk, exchange information, pleasantries. Now the girlfriend looks baffled.

A Mustang's Revenge - The Video [setup] Quiet, isolated PRIVATE ranch drive. Little red 2.0 914 sits waiting for the bully 5.0 Mustang to get ready. This Mustang guy is real hot stuff (they say), and will avenge the Saleen. Lets some air out of the drag radials for better traction. Got his tires in the dirt (before the video starts) so did a burnout to clean them. Did a another burnout to warm the tires. 914 still sitting there, idling, watching all this preparation. Video starts. Mustang stages, tests traction yet again, backs up into position. Then the arms are up, the arms drop... and ...and... and... another Mustang is embarrassed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6JxpYwqUMs

This is a story that I guarantee you will not ever hear repeated by a Mustanger.

I'm proud of the 914 beating a mustang, after all it is a V8, but it looked, sounded and went like a stock 5.0 nothing special....

I beat several mustangs at AX including a late model cobra (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

SO the moral of the story is if you want to beat a mustang buy a Subaru! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif) Or at least drop a Subaru engine/tranny in a teener! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

I had s similar experience with about the same year mustang back in the late 80's, it was a run from New Era (outside Canby for 3 miles). I actually beat him off the line, he passed me on the 1st straight away and I hammered him on the corners, I still beat him through the last corner before I pulled over at the straightaway ( as it was long enough he would have taken me). He couldn't believe I had a stock 2.0, to his 5.0. It was even better when I told him I got 25-28 mpg.

Nah. Hoonage existed before me, will go on after me, and in any case at my age I mostly just like to watch. Plus if they're members of this board they probably have original motors and have already figured out that that drag racing a 914 isn't that much fun anyway.

It had a stock bottom end, but performance aftermarket intake, big valve aluminum aftermarket heads and throttle body, cam and headers. That much we know. Supposedly ran mid-11's in 120's on the bottle, so definitely not stock, but you never know when asking about someone's car. Sometimes those facts can be shiftier than their ex-wives.

Nah, no moral, just some fun. Anyway, no one in his right mind would drag race a 914.

Back on that private country drive. Still no respect for 914's, this time a hotted up GTO:

Same ending. GTO didn't even do as well as the Saleen.

In all fairness, we told these dudes that the 914 was an abandoned Fiat we found in a field, making a little under 60 horsepower, so we added a turbo to it as a Frankenstein project. And they didn't know any better. We went out to race just because "it'll be funny." I really wish I'd had a few bucks to throw down on these races. Because it definitely was funny!! Haha

That mustang had aftermarket heads along with some other stuff, and was set up to run a large nitrous shot. But he didn't use his nitrous that night. He claims to have gone high 11s, but I have my doubts. It wasn't the fastest Mustang out there, by any means. But more importantly, everyone assumed it would still rip the 914 off the line and then walk away. The whole length of the race. The dude was a little disappointed when neither of those things happened! Haha

Another note, (and don't tell DB this) to assure the win, I turned the boost controller a little too high, so it was hitting fuel cut after shifting (16psi). It was tricky, because it was getting colder through the night, and therefore making more boost as time went on. You can hear it cut a few times in the video. This was enormously frustrating because the Mustang got 3 or 4 free car lengths that way... But it still wasn't enough to get around the 914!!

The dude in the GTO had just bought the car, and said he wasn't used to shifting it yet. Typical excuses... In response, I asked him if the check engine light was on, because it seemed to be down a couple of cylinders. He laughed that off, so then I asked him if the "oh crap, we just lost to a Fiat" light was on. He ignored me for the rest of the evening.

The 914 did great, and went right back to daily driver duty the next morning. No drama, no maintenance or repairs needed. It's a very impressive little machine!

You asked about the poor guy's "the oh crap, we just lost to a Fiat" light? That's hilarious. I'm still surprised you get away with that crap. Surprised and impressed.

Gentlemen, meet my son Thomas (roachghia). He now has his own 914/WRX so won't be borrowing mine any more. I've already turned the boost back down.

Invite those yahoos to an autocross, see if any are brave enough to show up. Yeah... probably not. Nevermind.
