Jeff, give me more on Sac/Camarillo using 101. It would be great if us "real" northwesterners could meet you bay area folks for a parade into Camarillo. We plan to be somewhere around Sacramento to spend Thursday night and leave for WCC on Friday am.
edit: gotta agree with Jeff K. I-5 from Sacramento south is no fun. Very boring and very fast. If the time difference is only an hour or two I would much rather go 101. Correct me Jeff (K and (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool.gif), but we're talking 101 which is a 4 lane highway, not PCH 1, right. I think Kevin is thinking of the true coast highway. edit 2: Why the hell when I type "B" for Bowlsby do I get a smiley? This place haunted? |

If I "slapped" you down I apologize. Early on I assumed everyone North West of LA would come through SF/SJ but now we know those North of the Bay Area (aka Pacific North West) may chose to come down I5. Hopefullly we can link somewhere but so far there are two distinct routes. As long as we all get there safely... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) |

Felix, no need for aplology. I was not at all offended. I do think we need to figure out a way to join up early on Friday morning and drive down 101. I-5 south of Sacramento is no fun.
I am so damned confused on threads now, but one of 'em has some thoughts about joining up from Mike Mueller and Jeff Bowlsby. Let's try to make it work. |

WCC05 Caravan – Last Leg
Cross-posted to the other thread cuz I'm not sure to which one it belongs... Highway 1 along the coast is not the road for our caravan to take. It’s a motorhome nightmare. Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 join at San Luis Obispo at the coast but from there south it’s a great road all the way to Camarillo. Here is one idea using yahoomaps data: Thursday Portland to Elk Grove - 600 miles, 9+ hours plus stops Suggest you go to Elk Grove, (30-40 minutes south of Sacramento) To avoid Friday morning Sacramento traffic and get cheaper hotel rates Friday 8:00am Depart Elk Grove for Gilroy - 130 miles, 2.0 hours Crossover from I-5 to Hwy 101 at Hwy 152 (just south of Santa Nella) 10:00am Gilroy - 914Club PNW and Bay Area Region rendezvous 10:30am Depart Gilroy on Hwy 101 for Camarillo - 302 miles, 5 hours add 1 hour for lunch/pit stops Lunch around King City 4:30pm Arrive in Camarillo Attached image(s) |

Look at the big brain on Bowlsby...good call, and it would be a gas to have 20-30 cars in a caravan....might even get a police escort.... Here are alternatives:
@ ~2 hour stops: San Jose to San Lucas = 116 miles San Lucas to Santa Maria = 103 miles Santa Maria to Camarillo = 118 miles exits to be determined @ ~3 hour stops: San Jose to 1st rest stop in San Miguel (Camp Roberts) = 161 miles San Miguel to 2nd rest stop in Santa Barbara = 153 miles |

I really like the idea of linking the I5 route to 101 to 1. The PNW'ers may make better time going further south on I5 and crossing at 41/46 to Paso Robles...

If I remember correctly 41/46 are very windy and can take a long time if you get stuck behind somebody. Fun during off hours though. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool.gif)

Jeff,
That's true but it's a toss up with Pacheco pass being windy (remember all the windmills) and sometimes foggy... |

Since we PNW'rs know little about the roads (except, as confirmed by Jeff Bowlsby's map, I-5 is a wasteland interrupted only by the fragrance of feed lots and SUV's doing 80 and up) we are at your mercy. I sure like Bowlsby's suggestion. However, as an old guy with a compressed bladder, I also like breaks at 2 hours rather than 3! We could organize a leader, mid-fielder or two, and a drag rider with phones when we get the two groups together.

Oh wise wizards from the North West,(calif that is) please help me on my quest. I am going to have a car on a tow dolly coming down this year. As I did last year.
Am I better off staying with the SUVs traveling at 80 on I5 or is the new escape route going to be doable?? I await your learned word of wisdom. CCLINMAPQUEST |

I-5 is the fast way......hit it and run to get there.
101 is "somewhat scenic" and takes longer. If you're really concerned, run with the Truckers on 99 outa Sackopotatoes to Bakertucky and join 5 again. |

Craig, Kevin, et al,
101 is semi-scenic, you can travel <80mph without being run off the road, and have more places to stop then I5. If you are in a hurry or are leaving late Friday then take I5. The decision for you is where to cut over. Sacramento 80 through SF, 152 to Gilroy, or 41/46 to Paso Robles are good choices. We can plan timed stops every 2 hours for rest and allow anyone to catch up. Give us a rough schedule and we'll see what we can link. Even if we just get one leg with a large group of 914's, that would be a sight to see and great photo op! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) |

I think Jeff Bowlsby's suggestion of Elk Grove is about as far as we can get on Thursday. The decision on crossing over on 152 to Gilroy or 41/46 to Paso Robles should be based on what is best for connecting with your group. Seems like leaving Elk Grove at 8 am Friday and meeting you in Gilroy about 10 works. What would the timing be if we met in Paso Robles?
