Yahoo Maps shows 2.5 hrs from Elk Grove to Gilroy crossing over on 205/580/880 to 101. Traffic could be slow on 205/580 but probably not bad after 9:00. Time may be faster cutting over on 152.
10:30 @ Gilroy may be a better place to stage the caravan than San Jose. 1:00 @ Pasa Robles which is 2 hours South + 1/2 hr stop 3:30 @ Santa Barbara for a photo op. Camarillo is another hour away so we'll be there in time for dinner and drinks! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) Sound Good? |

Mapquest says 4 hours 20 minutes, 260 miles, from Elk Grove to Paso Robles. The first 197 miles is I-5 so it's about 60 miles across on 41/46. Leaving at 8 we could get there by 1 pm for a rendezvous. Sounds like 152 vs 41/46 is a question of how much I-5 we want. I like meeting in Gilroy to avoid it. We northerners will get the 85 mph SUV experience on the way home.

I would like to take an oblique right off I5 to Paso Robles. There is an excellent gas stop at Kettleman City, the I5 interchange there.
In and Out and all kinds of gas stations to top off. Plus I havent been down that road before. |

an suv doing 80+ on the point will shave some time. if i'm doing 80, i'm not getting in the truck lane for anything. i'll brake light them off til they get the message. last year it took me 17 miles to get behind you and jim after we got seperated. i could see you but was stuck about 8 cars back in the fast lane. i picked them off one by one.

I think road to Paso Robles would be more fun. We are doing 578 miles on I-5 from Wilsonville to Elk Grove or there about, 200 more to the turn to Paso. Home will be all I-5. And Kevin gets a 130 mile appetizer and dessert to and from Tacoma.

Maybe someone can speak up about what 41/46 is like, its not a road I am familiar with.
About 50% of 152 between 5 and 101 is a scenic curvy road through a small mountain pass (maybe 1500 ft?), but I think this trip is more about getting there with minimal delay. So whether 152 or 41/46 its up to you. Someone should just decide and post the route with times. Maybe the 101 914 train can meet up with you in Paso Robles if thats whats decided. Is there a good place to rendevous in Paso Robles? Whatever you guys decide...its up to you. |

Felix/Jeff: When the final itinerary is decided, please post and I can meet up with you guys in San Jose for the departure to the next "rally point". FWIW I like the idea of going the 101 route and arriving in Camarillo in time for dinner. Later, |

Wherever the PNW group departs I5 we can make Pasa Robles that link for all the 101. I say we give a good hour timeframe before going on to Camarillo to insure most people can make it.
41/46 can be a slow for non-towing cars since many semi-trailer trucks use this crossover. Sometimes it's a breeze and sometimes there's a line of trucks. It is primarily a two lane highway and where James Dean met his demise... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) I think there is a shrine now. I'm thinking 152 may be better for the pack... |

If you're in Lompoc, you're on Hiway 1, not 101. That WILL take you longer. Come across 41/46 to Paso Robles, and go down 101. |

just a reminder:
55 MPH speed limit for tow vehicles and slow lane only.....of course it's only illegal if you get caught (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/MDB2.gif) |

Felix, it is not clear in the article where the spot/shrine is. At the intersection of 46 and 41? I don't want to miss it if we go that way. I am old enough to have seen his films in first run theaters, Giant after he died. I still love to watch Rebel Without a Cause. I was 14 when I first saw it, the perfect age. Every time I see that black 49 Merc 2 door I want to go out an buy one. Had one in high school and another in the mid-seventies which I should have kept.
