Still going through the list of things not working when I bought my 914. Today's project was wiring up the horn. It took me as far as pulling the steering wheel before grinding to a halt with confusion. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Anyone know if there's a way to still use the original copper plates on the steering column switch if I have an aftermarket wheel with an adaptor?

The other two solutions I can think of would be wire it to a button/switch on the dash, or wire it to the right steering column switch so it sounds when pulled toward (so in place of the windscreen washer, which doesn't work anyway).

Anyone with way more knowledge of 914 electrics have any thoughts of either of these options? Do I have to pull the entire steering column switch assembly, plus ignition switch to get to the wires that power the horn?

Here's the wheel adaptor:

Thanks

You need the ring on the back of the adapter. I know the 924 stock steering wheel ring will fit the momo hub.

Once you have the ring, plug into the horn button and you're done.

Okay, while I'm talking steering column switches, the other thing I need to figure out is how to get the adaptor to turn off the turn signal?

Is there a know fix for this too, or can someone show me how an OEM 914 wheel does it so I can figure out how to replicate it?

Thanks
John

The tab that sticks out on the missing ring cancels the signal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Where's the horn wire? I thought there was a wire that ran up the steering column from either the horn relay, or from the horn itself?

Ground that wire, and the horn should sound.

I'm not sure. I pulled the steering wheel expecting to find a wire, but I guess it's wired into the back of the steering wheel switch. All there is are the copper tabs.

The missing ring has the wire, return tab and a copper ring that rides on the copper spring on the column. There is a wire, inside the column connected to the copper spring terminal that goes to the relay.

The spring is located at "12 & 6 O'Clock" inside the column in the above picture.

Thanks Mike. I already ordered the first one you showed me from 944online.

Don't think I have my account set up right as I'm not getting notifications when people reply to my threads.

Horn ring turned up today from 944online. The ring looks like it will need some modification to fit, but nothing too drastic, just a little trimming of the plastic.

I crudely test wired it and pressed the button, but nothing happened, so it looks like while I definitely need it there's a problem elsewhere in the circuit.

Can anyone tell me where the turn signal return tab should sit when the wheel is refitted and the wheels are straight? The way the ring fits the adaptor means it can only be put on one way, and at the moment the return tab is sitting at 7 o'clock.
