I almost forgot, when I was painting my sons wheels with the Plasti Dip I decided to do the leading edge off my rocker panels. These are fiberglass and took a beating with just paint, so it was not smooth when I put on about 10 coats. This has been through 3 autocrosses and about 190 miles at Buttonwillow Raceway with soft compound tires that throw off tons of gravel. This coating has 600 miles of flat towing down to Buttonwillow and back this past weekend. I didn't expect much and I am glad this thread surfaced so It reminded me to go give a look. Pretty good!

We're not only cheap but some of us poor. I've been saving for a great paint Job (with me doing the prep) but with kids and bills still can't do it. If it looks half way decent and lasts only a year it's a good $300 well spent. Exactly why I chose to dip instead of paint. |

Wow... Just Wow! I'm not so sure you're going to like it here. If you land in the middle of a productive conversation with 25 posts under your belt and immediately declare that anyone who even contemplates using the subject product lacks in intelligence, you are asking for exactly what you have received. If you have pictures of what you claim, please post them, and you will be taken seriously. Otherwise, you will be perceived as a newbie with an attitude, and I have found that isn't welcome on very many forums, not just here. This forum is comprised of a lot of great folks who know a hell of a lot but are still interested in discussing new trends and technologies. Coming in new and immediately disparaging the five guys (who have been around much longer than you) who have been happy with the product will only serve to alienate you. From what you have posted, I gather that you have experience in paint. It might be more productive to persuade people if you posted your empirical findings rather than rants and insults. I also did plasti-dip on my wheels about a year ago and they are still holding up great. I'd be curious how long a car painted with plasti-dip will last, keep us posted!
Also one of my co-workers rattle canned his chevelle satin black (with regular paint) and its lasted him 3 years so far! The satin paint look in general might be a great option for driver quality cars... |

This looks like an interesting alternative to an expensive paint job for cars that are driven.
BTW... this forum isn't one where we tend to engage in newbie bashing, even when they ask the same dumb questions that have been covered over and over again. It really does take a purposefully argumentative statement to rile us up. |

so - bottom line here is . . . "Where are the pictures of what it looks like after a gloss coat?"

I did the rims on my BMW last year and LOVE it. Easy to remove when you want to. Hard to come off when you don't.
I'm doing my Land Rover in "Anthracite" as soon as the weather turns. I bought 4gal late last year. Spraying it out of a can sucks for a whole car, but with a HVLP gun, it's WAY easy to knock a car out in about 2h. You're driving it in 3h. I did my wheels with rattle cans from home depot. I used 1 can per wheel. Make sure your over spray is thick so it pulls off. So I get my point across....I'll say this in all caps. PUT 3-4 MORE COATS THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED! If it's too thin PlastiDip is a royal pain to remove. It comes off in 1" pieces. If you put 6-8 coats on, you can damn-near remove a whole car in one sheet. I did the hood on my land-rover in flat-black to cut the glare (which it did) but I did it too thin, so when I went to remove it, I gave up after an hour. Now it looks like shit. |

Stuff peals right off and it looks like there are a lot of artistic people trying all sorts of cool techniques with pearls and gloss and metal flakes. Plus, you can change your mind every few years for a lot less money. It DOES look cool ...when/if you remove this stuff it will take half the paint off... Not a chance. I've used in a lot on car doors, rims, and hoods. No paint loss at all., If anything, it pulled "deep down" dirt ourt of scratches and swirly. The best wax job my car ever had was after I pulled the Plasti-Dip off. Lots of great examples here: https://www.dipyourcar.com/examples.html Here's the color I'm doing my disco in: (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/www.dipyourcar.com-3342-1400175230.1.jpg) |

are you using any gloss?
I was going to buy a small kit and do a hood or door, just so I can see what it looks like, how it works etc. I want to play with the gloss, the pearls and metal flakes. |

I was also considering doing my race car graphics and numbers with plasti-dip.
I got bashed when I mentioned it on the BRZ forum for wheels. I thought that if you couldnt decide what colors you wanted on the wheels, plistidip them for $40 before blowing $500 on powder coat. If you like it peel it off and have it PCed. If you dont like it, peel it off and try another color. |

The crazy part, especially for the race guys, is that it does not weigh much more then paint. I saw an article where the guys from dip your car.com pulled all the multiple layers he had on his S4 and weighed it, and it was surprising how light it was. There are a few threads on the dipyourcar forum that he posts allot of his information on.

I have seen the gloss product (glossifier, they call it) and If you ask me it works just OK. It definitely has more shine than regular plasti-dip but plasti-dip doesn't have any to begin with. It won't be completely flat like paint, to me it looked somewhat like very small dimpled orange peel. They have come a long way with plasti-dip products so I wouldn't be surprised if they refine it even more and it gets better. |

Surprised that was the reaction of the BRZ folks, my daily's a 2002 WRX and the guys on the Subaru forum I occasionally frequent - which is hands down the worst car forum for trolling I've ever been on - love this stuff. I did my wheels matte black with the rattle can 15 months ago and it's held up amazingly. To anyone that's used the sprayer, I plan to do my Fuchs full black this month, is it worth getting the sprayer or would you think for a job that size it won't make much difference? |

I wouldn't buy the sprayer for just a set of wheels, cans would be better. I could see the spray gun getting in the way when trying to get to all the small corners of certain wheels. |

Thought of a good use for Pdip. (no not a rappers name).
Going to spray a couple of welding magnets with it. I usually wrap the magnets in a plastic shopping bag but ultimately they accumulate shavings. And those things are a pita when stuck in your finger. Figure I will still use the plastic bag but maybe once a year peel the Pdip. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Okay, here we go, did my front wheels today using 4 coats of black and then 4 coats of the glossifier (both from a can). Pretty happy with the results, they have that just powder coated shine to them right now. Will be interesting to see how the gloss holds up once it's fully dry, it's still a bit rubbery/tacky to the touch right now.

Figured I'd revive this post....
I parked next to this guy 2 times this weekend. Friday night then on Saturday afternoon, 30 miles from the 1st place. Not sure but I think it is the DIP-YOUR-PORSCHE paint job. Looked awesome. Clark |
