There was another 916 in the US for a while & it was Gemini Blue. It was sold around 4 or 5 years ago & I believe it's back in Europe. My recollection is that car was at Monterey in 1998. I THINK George of AA was there, with it, at the time. He could correct me on that..... When I asked him about it he didn't offer any information on it. I would have thought he would have told me he has/had that one too. But that's just common sense to me. |

My recollection is that car was at Monterey in 1998. I THINK George of AA was there, with it, at the time. He could correct me on that..... He may have been there but as far as I know he never owned that car. Through much effort on his part he bought the silver 916 when it became available & has owned it ever since. That Gemini blue 916 quietly crossed the Atlantic sometime in the very late 1980's or early 1990's, from private hands & then not so quietly crossed back just a few years ago. Georges silver 916 is once again the only one in N. America. The other 10 916s are in Europe, either in private hands or the families hands. I don't know if the museum has one, but I'd presume they do. The question I always ask is why was it feasible to turn the 924 into the 944, but not so with the 914 into the 916? I read someplace once that @ the time, a 916 would have listed for $5k more than the top of the line 911S @ the time & we all know nothing can surpass the "flagship". Well they had intended the 916 to be their new supercar and recognizing the 914s obvious advantages over the 911. But the 914 got lackluster reviews so production never went forward. Ironic considering it was Porsche's best selling model by far to date. Though that was likely because of the /4's low price point. Otherwise the /6 would have continued.
If only the /4 had more (hp). But then it would have surpassed the 911 flagship. And Porsche wouldn't do that. Which is also ironic because they were looking for a replacement (928 and 944 were both supposed to replace the 911). |

I don't know if the museum has one, but I'd presume they do. just to get this correct: - there are (3) 916 in the USA - there are (7) 916 in Europe - the one ending with #0015 is lost without a trace - very likely totalled in the early years - the Museum doesn't have one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Gustl |

Thank you for the current info. Did not know a 916 had been lost. Did not know the museum doesn't have one & had no idea there were 3 here in the US. Very cool to know & again, thanks m8 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

So Hussey's (Brumos) silver 916 was delivered to US spec with the side markers as I thought. I guess by regulation it had to be regardless of what they were going to do with it jjust for bringing it into the country.

Huh. Interesting. I knew about the ignition switch of course, but didn't consider that part of the chassis I guess. I didn't know about the rest of it. Interesting. it's quite possible that the reason that one in particular has the side markers is because it's the only one that came to the United States. So they were probably installed at the factory for US spec. If that's the case, they should remain for originality. but yeah they would look better without. You're right, it had the side markers installed because it is the only 916 Porsche exported to the US, but it's still a prototype which to me means carte blanche & to hell with originality. That interior is not what the car came with from the factory & has been redone, very nicely I might add, so why not shave the warts off? It's a prototype, so if you want you can paint it pink with purple polka dots if you like (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) BTW- the AC was installed @ Brumos, not @ the factory. Yep, and my buddy Phil (R.I.P) was hanging around the dealership the day they installed it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) |

I can honestly say if it weren't for Phil, I probably wouldn't have fallen in love with the 914. I met him within 24 hours of owning my first one (he followed me around when he saw my car). It was a real junker with lots of issues. Phil kept me in the game. I'll always be grateful for him. He was a good friend |

I can confirm that one of them (almost certainly #18) was at the 98 Monterey Historics. I even have a few photos of it around somewhere. I'll need to scan them... It used to live up around Clear Lake or somewhere like that, and was occasionally driven on the street. It showed up at a Stanford Concours, and was seen driving away from that down El Camiono Real... It wound up for sale at a "classic car" type dealer in SF, and was listed on Ebay on several occasions.
The list says that it's now in Austria. It must have been re-imported in the mid- to late-2000s? --DD |

916 #18 was most definitely at the Monterey Historics in '98. I have a ton of pictures of it and with it. It carried the blue CA license plate of 916 S at the time.
About 5-6 years ago it came up for sale and I called on it just for grins. I think I saw it in Hemmings. The owner was asking $300,000 for it so that pretty much crushed any thoughts I had about snagging it for the coup of a lifetime. I saw a youtube video a couple of years after that call showing the car being driven in Austria by a couple of younger looking guys. I did hear that it was indeed sold and went back to Europe. The story was also told that the, I believe 2.4 liter motor, was rebuilt by the new owner and the mechanicals refreshed. I did think about selling my house and buying it, but somehow I don't think my wife would have enjoyed living in a 916 as much as I would have. |
