Bet that sounded nice driving across the grass for its award! Sorry to have missed that! Seeing the Piech 914-8 would have been pretty special too!!

Neatest thing is that car is original...

I took video of them driving. It was pretty cool to hear a historic GT! I'm sure some of the parts must've been replaced. Driving lenses were clear with no chips. I'm surprised the paint was so good too. Really cool to see. The other GTs coming soon. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

And yes, the 350 bhp 914/8 was worth the price of admission alone! I know a lot of people were very anxious to see that car which is why I took so many detailed pictures of it. Who knows? Maybe they will even help someone try to make a clone! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

1970 914/6 GT #2

One of the 1 - 2 - 3 GTs that finished in the top three spots in the Marathon de la Route at Nurburgring in 1970. 86 hours of punishing racing beginning with 64 cars, only 23 remained and the 914/6 1, 2, 3 GTs finished together far ahead of entire field in a blaze of glory.

Thanks for the detail shots of the #2 Nurburgring car. It really gets me thinking about the mercurial legacy of the 914. On the one hand, a racing platform that proved almost too good for Porsche marketing purposes, while as a humble, entry-level sports car for the masses it carried such state of the art elements as 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, independent rear suspension, optimal weight distribution and air cooled simplicity. Combine that with flexible storage at both ends, spacious cabin for two, a rigid removable top that stows in seconds without robbing space, thrifty fuel consumption and a huge fuel tank for long range cruising and you have a blazing star streaking across the automotive universe....disappearing before many even saw the flash.

It passed so quickly from the scene that it's charm was appreciated by a narrow slice of enthusiasts at the time, and yet, 40 years later, the car remains relevant on the track, street and especially.....those twisty canyon roads.

I'm sure the 914 legacy created an awakening among some of the Amelia Island attendees and made them pause to consider the 914 in a different light. While not viewed as a styling masterpiece, time has treated our funny little cars well: ahead of it's time in it's day and standing the test of time in the present. We are privileged to share that little secret of 914 brilliance which is now being recognized on a somewhat wider scale.

I find it odd, both in concept & the fact that it was in concours. Looks nice, but it's still odd.

See the 7th picture of Post#280 for other examples of cars in the concurs that were not factory modified.

Read up on who owns & restored it, that will clear up why it was there.

Some interesting points that I have always believed, but it is difficult for a company to face having a lower cost product be superior (or at least more bang for the buck) to its high end product. The Cayman has faced some of these hurdles - many consider it superior to the 911 at a lower price point.

I will digress on one of your comments though - 50/50 weight distribution. In its day that was considered optimal and a design achievement, but in todays world the preference is to rear bias. Interesting how things change.

Actually, I think the 914/4 weight distribution is 46/54, putting it at an optimal level today and ahead of the curve in 1970.
