One thing that needs to be remembered is that if you are replacing FI with Carbs, and need to change the CAM as previously talked about, the CAM replacement requires that the engine be removed and disassembled to allow splitting the case. This gets expensive. I bought my Carb Car and had a complete engine rebuild done so adding the Carb CAM was included in the total cost. You might need to concider the bigger picture if making the swap FI to Carb. I'm happy with the way things our now.

The question also to be asked is does a Carb Car with a Carb Cam need to have the Carb Cam replaced if converting back to FI?

A 914 engine with a stock FI cam can be made to run decently with carbs.

A 914 engine with a carb-oriented cam cannot be made to run well with the stock FI on it. Anything but the mildest of cams do not play with D-jet; I am less certain about L-jet. There are slightly more aggressive cams that can be made to work with D-jet, but they are not really what we think of when we talk about cams for carbed motors.

my question is; when changing to carbs, what other mods should be done to get it to be optimum? What can I do to make my carbs work better with the car above and beyond proper tuning and fuel supply?

First thing is to determine if you have a sound engine. Start with a compression/leak down test.
The best carb or FI intake system won't work worth a crap if the engine is beat.

I personally am a fan of carburetion. That being said, there is a set up I would avoid all together. It is a single Weber carb. It has given more people headaches than bad FI and bad carbs altogether. Unless of course you are prepared to replace it when you purchase it. I have gotten great MPG from putting dual singles on stock motors but the D-jet lacks real performance. The L-jet was fine as it is an aspirated device. Buy a carbed -6 and you will listen to it instead of the stereo.

This defies common sense

Carbs ( dual webbs ) by definition are performance oriented to say the least .

Not made for idle or cold start in anyway.
This must be understood before you make it even worse/better with port and polished heads , headers, Super unleaded gas etc. That all compliment a carbs performance while making cold start , idle still suffer.

But fuel injection you get the best of both worlds as everthing that go's in and out of the engine is monitored and tweaked to keep air fuel ratio at peak and the injector pulse exceeded any carbs ability to squirt fuel

Cost and complexity is my enemy so ill stick with carbs but i prefer the untamed behavior of carbs as the car is pre smog so why not . rant over
