I think I need to drop by for a visit.
WHAT is that beetle in the background? hmmmm?

The 550 is the Autox tool, until the 904 is done.

You mean the baby one? One of Wray's students is working on it, he had never shaped metal in his life. It's amazing what you can learn by taking his 4 day class.

Just an update, after 7 years the 550 build is now in the shape of a car. Hoping to get back on the 904 in the coming months.

man that is a lot of history mixed up into one project! basically a 914/6 racer with 4 different 550's donating parts? what is the motor going to be? i think you should do one of Erick Shea's 2.3's!

There isn't any 914 in this car, that's the other build. This one had half a chassis from a 356C, and the rest an old repro 550 frame.
The motor is a 912 motor that Vic Skirmants build for me.

Today we said goodbye to the test bed chassis that has been sitting in the back of the yard under a pile of tires.
If you recall this was the center seater 914, a rare option!
Hoping to get back on the 904 build this Fall.

Cleaned the shop today and this shone through.
Now that the 550 is out west getting finished I'm back on this car.
Stay Tuned.

I've been wondering what happened to this build. Should be interesting, you've got more skills now.

About two years ago I stalled on this one to devote more time to the 550 build, now back on this, it's like having a wife and two girlfriends!

There is always one elusive part in every build that seems impossible. Since the 904 was not a mass production vehicle Porsche outsourced many of the parts from other cars. For example, the tail lights are from a SAAB Sonett. I found these several years ago, but had to buy a complete SAAB rear clip to get them! But the part that was super elusive was the door latches, which were sourced from a SIMCA 1000. Finding anyone with SIMCA parts has been impossible. I think they all went to the crusher, no parting out, no saving anything, like a French K-Car. I'd been searching for 10 years, everywhere, and got nothing. With Facebook Marketplace taking a larger role in online commerce I tried there recently, and sure enough, a guy had not one but two SIMCA's. He was reluctant to sell me just the latches since it would devalue the car, but I offered him Porsche money for a SIMCA part and he was agreeable. So, one of the last pieces of the puzzle!

I've actually got a pretty good plan for that. I've been having paralysis about mounting the body, how best to do it. So I recruited two friends who know a lot more than me. One spent the last 40 years restoring a 904 and the other spent the last 40 years restoring every Porsche, including the same 904. Both were happy to help so we're taking a week in January to hopefully get the body mounted and doors hung, now that I have latches!

I'm a bit surprised that those cars/parts are hard to come by. The Simca 1000 was pretty much everywhere when i was growing up in Germany. I never considered them rare.
