The problem is this part is hidden in the car. You don't realize you need one until it completely fails. 99% of us really do need one. We are all in denial since it's a PITA to get to.

This gives you an idea of where the steering coupler is located. I have included a pic of one of the two lock tab washers that are also prone to breaking. One on this car was broken, and it's not something you want to put together without putting in good ones or new if yours are broken.
