After re-installing the cooling tin (after painting) I put the phenloic intake gasket on the head to see how the fit was going to be. The tin has 3 tabs that extend under the gasket. Is the gasket supposed to go onto the head first then the tin? When I took the intakes off, the gaskets came with them. I figure the gasket should go over the tin but wouldn't that be cause for a vacuum leak??? Here's the tabs on the tin I'm speaking of.

Thanks Scott on both answers! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif) The tin is under the gasket about an 1/8". As for the tin, I spent two hours cleaning & painting it. Next time I do that it'll be outta the car! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

I thought the same thing when I was test fitting mine, but under the tabs on the tin there is a space on the head that the tab get pushed into when the gasket is in place.

Thanks Sean... that's good news. I learned quite a bit today & yesterday taking this tin off for the first time. There's some cool stuff under there! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

It's a '74.

There wasn't too much crap on the cooling fins. Brinkmans brake cleaner took care of that along with the oil cooler. I did have to scrub the bright center area of the engine tho... geeze, what a bunch of built up stuff!

Glad I installed the drivers side tin first (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif) that was one hard sumbitch to get back in without beat'n the shit outta the new paint. I'll get it finished today & post a pic.

I don't recall the left and right arrowed spots on the engine tin interfering with the gasket on my car. The middle arrow would, if there were not a recess in the cylinder head for the tin to slide into.

I found the left arrow'd tab did not interfere but the right one sure did. I cliped it and it fits fine.

Not sure how the normal way is to re-install the runners... I installed the plenum then pushed the runners into it. T'was a beotch to say the least. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) Had to use a wee bit O' lube!!! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

When installing these gaskets do you use any gasket sealer on those, or installed without any sealer?

No sealer is necessary.

I used silicone spray on the inside of the intake runner seals between the plenum and runners. Popped together nice and easy. Did not use any sealant on the phenolic.

Actually, I used short pieces of radiator hose instead of the official intake runner seals. Get the right size, they fit nice and snug. And cost a fraction of the official part. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)
