To scan the airwaves you need something like this:

I am getting sick of all this bullshit about Linksys products. I have been using a Linksys wireless (802.11b) router continuously for about 3 years now, ZERO PROBLEMS. Better than that POS d-link and netgear crap.

I am guessing that because his old b router hardly worked, and the g router is having problems, he is dealing with an interference issue. b/g share the same frequencies but g is a little bit more robust because of the OFDM modulation. b is CCK which is very primitive.
Mike - Try every channel and see if there is one that works. Make sure the antenna auto select/diversity is on (it should be by default). You could try limiting the data rate to something below 54mb and see if that gives you a more solid (but slow) connection. Beyond that these are the things I would try - Moving the router/laptop to another room or part of the house just to see if it is localized interference. Try a different 802.11b/g card for the laptop. If it's builtin then try an external USB/PCMCIA device. If all else fails try another brand of router, or consider moving to 802.11a which should be more robust simply because there is less interference to deal with at 5GHz. But you are looking at a $150 router now plus a much more expensive laptop card. I am not a big fan of 802.11a because of price, but if it's the only thing that will work in your environment... I am hoping this isn't some weird software problem... |

I had the same thing early last year.
I run WPA with no issues now. SEE: Feds Hack Wireless Network in 3 Minutes on slashdot.org today Just check the basics first. Upgrade to latest router firmware Upgrade laptop to latest firmware Upgrade OS to latest patch (XP Service Pack 2 makes a huge difference on wireless) (my longest range so far is 120 yards at work (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/blink.gif) ) -Rich Hilgersom |

Did you or your neighbors get any new wireless phones? The 2.4 GHz home phones can cause these problems, even if they are not in use, just the base stations plugged in. Go 900 MHz or 5.8 MHz, but skip the 2.4s.
Generally speaking, the 2.4 GHz shouldn't cause a problem like what you are having. I'd bet that your access point/router is flakey. Just like with cars, change the cheapest thing first and see if it gets better. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) If you are using a laptop, get a wireless PCMCIA card and try it. If that work better than the one in the laptop, there is your answer. Also, some of the built-in wireless antennas in laptops really suck. The market makes it so you need a wireless antenna in a laptop, but that doesn't mean it needs to be a good one. We have had all kinds of issues with Sony's built-in wireless nics. We have put PCMCIA cards in, disabled the internal and gotten good results. Or, you could piss on it. |

I had the same problem with my 802.11b Netgear router, it would hunt for channels and lock on for about 3 minutes then hunt again. I tried locking it to one channel and couldn't get it to hold the signal. Soooo I bought a LinkSYS G and it has been great for over 7 months.
Just keep trying! I loaded BOINGO software onto my laptop so I could sniff out all of the networks near me. It is kind of cool pulling up to someones house and checking your e-mails! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool_shades.gif) Jeff |

i've found that the old school windows xp wireless "zero-config" bullshit doesn't work real well....what it COULD be is that your laptop keeps on picking up that other wireless connection every so often, mine did at least. BOINGO solved that problem...just set, manually connect and your off to business....with your bunny ears on! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)
