I can't remember, but there is a way... it will give you a small preview on the left when you click on it... I always just used ACDSee:

get a program like ACDSee to browse thumbnails...

Win98 eh? let's see, haven't dealt with it in years ...

but, there should be a setting under "View" or something that reads something line "View as Webpage". if that is checked, every time you select a file (just one click, not double click), it'll show you a preview of the file on the left ...

Yes, I have that option checked. Under folder options, there is a "file types" tab that will let me change the program that opens the pics. Anything there that might help?

That is exactly what I want to do Andy. Preview a thumbnail on the same page. It now opens it a new window in full screen.

what do you mean by "Preview a thumbnail" ??? do you mean "Full View", not preview (a Thumbnail *is* a preview)?
you want more than 1 full view at the time? more than 1 thumbnail at the time?

you want this? (thumbnails for each picture, still need to click each individual picture to view it full size)
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-11-1113413293.jpg)

or

you want this? (full view of each picture, in the same window, where you can cycle through the pictures in a folder by pressing the forward/backward button)
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-11-1113413310.jpg)

or

something else?
