Spectrum? Ok, I'll look into it. The tar has held up well. Since reading all of these posts, I've taken samples off and have found just clean, bare metal. I guess I'm lucky.
I appreciate all of the feedback and dialogue, everyone. I'm new to 914World.

If you don't want to to use an adhesive backed sound sheet for fear of water entrapment, consider something like Spectrum or Spectrum Sludge

I used Spectrum on a VW Bug pan over 10 years ago and it's still going strong. I used a brush to apply multiple coats after I had completed all rust repairs and primed the pan. Definitely got rid of the tinniness of a bare metal pan.

I too took off samples and found bare metal so I decided not to do the whole floor, but then I saw ndfrigi's photos and so I checked those areas.

Sure enough, I found rust under the drivers side tar. Its only surface rust but I am now converted and will strip the entire floor pan.

Did you look around the accelerator pedal?
I noticed the rust is in the low spots/valleys.

I hope you are lucky and don't have any Dan.

good luck.

ps.s Thanks to ndfrigi for the pictures, it was an eye opener!

$39 multi tool at Harbor Freight. It cuts the tar out like hot butter. 80% less time and mess of a heat gun

Best $40 you will ever spend!!!

It took me 30min to remove all the tar. It just flakes off. Don't use heat.

Did porsche use this method of coating on the 911s also?

Yep

I use Toluene to tidy things up after the scraping is done.
