I took possession of this 76 in early September as a poorly repainted roller with three motors in various states of undress. The best of which looked to be halfway built, fresh on one side and left open on the other which had badly pitted the cam. As it turns out this is probably a good thing since it won't be a mystery as to what is in it when I get it all back together and can build it to suit. Here are some initial images of the car after I pulled everything out to have a look and take inventory of all the parts and or lack thereof. The planned next step is to strip it right down and media blast it to unearth the issues, order panels and start piecing it back together.
The goal is to revert back to the original light ivory. Fiberglass matt and I'm assuming POR-15 is covering some nasty stuff. 2.0 with jugs that were bored out to 4" Structure is overrated. I'm sure this is much lighter without all that fiber reinforced tape that was there |

Making progress on the tear down. Only broke one plastic fastener on the turn signal.
Those vacant dead eyes though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

Good luck with the fiberglass floor pan. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Does that fun run up onto the inside longs as well?

I got my case split and I have some questions.
One of the pins under the bearing has some slop. I'm assuming this is will need to be addressed. The motor also came with 101mm cylinders. I thought they were just bored out jugs but I'm thinking that the case was machined to accept bigger jugs. Is there any way to tell by this picture if the case has been modified? My goal is to go down to a more reasonable 2056. Any advice on how to get there from here would be great. |

Great progress!!! Thanks! Probably not much effort for those that have done it before but I'm getting an education as I go and thinking each step through so that I don't do damage. It sounds like that dowel hole will need to be welded and re-drilled and should never have been left. The sump tray seal also looked like it was installed incorrectly and partially crushed. Probably a good thing was never finished and cranked. Any other suggestions while I have it in the Bridgeport? I'm thinking about having the blind holes capped with threaded inserts. A few more images of the disassembly. Pitted cam lobe as a result of the ending being left open. It's funny because the finished side was all plugged with rags and the other side was wide open like this project came to an abrupt halt. All new seals, all new bearings. What a waste of time and resources. |

I managed to get the remaining fiberglass off the passenger floor and have a pretty good idea of the situation. It looks like the newer rear pan was lapped over the hacked off front by about 4" and riveted into place. At this point it looks like there is no salvaging the front pans. No surprise that there was more angle iron, foil tape, duct tape and galvanized tin on the right side.
I've been working on cleaning up the gauges some more. It is interesting to see how much the needles have faded the past 40 years. I'm going to brighten them up and replace the warning light foil while I have it all apart. |
