This inner long piece is about 0.25" shorter than the original. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)Is it an 'R-D' piece? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Pretty sure that's a AA piece. I had that same piece and then purchased the long section from Germany. It's a repo to the factory part but it was also shorter. I finally found the right factory section for my 6 repair. It's not gonna be an easy fix. As Mark has stated lots of measuring. I recently purchased a set of 914 chassis fixtures which should help in fixing my 6. Mark, when I was looking at using that long section from AA I found a few problems with it. The seat belt mount location was off, hot air tube hole was way too small, and needed a lot of fitting to fit proper. Hope it works out. |

That's my complaint list too. Got started on the drawing, but found out the front of the long is shorter than the back to accommodate the 'rise' in the floor pan. Duh. But I'm asking the shop if they can make bends this close together. If not, I'll have to make it flat like the other repro parts. Or something else I have in the back of my mind. Here's a link to what I was dealing with.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...87820&st=20 I sold both pieces when I found the factory part. I can dig my factory long out and take measurements if you need some. |

The restoration design part has the same flaws. It isn’t quite the correct size and the front heater tube hole is not even close to being the proper size. But we have to make do.

pinch weld is straight regardless Damn, good catch. Hmmm.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)The restoration design part has the same flaws. I'm confident the part R-D sells is not made by them, but likely AA or the same people. If R-D makes their own version, I expect it will be massively better. |

CNC shop called and said this design is totally fine. So after adding the last few features, I think this is the final -- unless someone else can see something I missed.

unless someone else can see something I missed. Give it some extra on the rounded end so you can bend it up to create the flange? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Hess stamps the drvr side and AA is the passenger side. Pete |

Are they aware that the pieces are too short, and need to rectify the issue? ... asking for a friend (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Why not a section from a parts car? ... asking for myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Seems the fabricated piece would not be a good replica, and I doubt it would be cheaper than a second panel and splicing. |

Given the age and lack of care most of these cars had over the decades compounded by zero rust protection from the factory, and finding good used sections might be a bit of a challenge. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Why not a section from a parts car? ... asking for myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Yup. If you get lucky and can find something in good shape. But it's SUCH a gamble. I don't want to get trapped trying to salvage a 'good' part that turns out to be rusty or bent. Yeah, there's some compromises, but there always is. Parts from another car are no exception. Everyone's gotta make their own choice about what works, and this is mine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) @SirAndy This what you had in mind? The blue block is a shaping tool I'll have them make so I can clamp it in place and hammer it into shape. I don't think it's worth chasing the bit of flange at the corner. But if you're really into it, I can have them cut a little curved piece and weld that into the gap. It's all time... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) Attached image(s) |

Got the new piece. Really happy with how it turned out, except I need two changes. 1) I had it made in 20g, which is the stock thickness. But I pulled out the driver side piece I have and that's 18g. I should have checked that first cause I want them to match for equal stiffness on both sides. 2) The top radius bend is just a hard 90 instead of a radius bend. But I did bend over the flanges at the front (by the heater tube) to make sure those worked, and it turned out great. If anyone is interested in buying the 'castoff' part, PM me.
BTW, the driver's side piece I have (HESS, apparently) is correct dimensions, so I won't need to go through this again. Attached image(s) |

I am following this just to see the results. There is no way I can do this type of work. I am NOT a body man in any way, shape or form. Body work is truly an art, and you are an artist.
Are you going to hammer and dolly all the external panels instead of putting in filler? |
