Then again, I may just drive to Boston and make McLaughlin (DJM914-6) help me.

You don't need air tools (but they're nice anytime) or specialized jacks, or anything special besides the triple-square CV joint tool.
Really, if you can do a valve adjustment, you can do this. -Rusty |

By the way, is there a way to "tighten" a clutch, aka adjust, to reduce slipping?

I got F'd by 2 porsche dealers - 1 in atlanta the other in phili. I would avoid them like the plauge.
The one dealership I ended filing a credit card despute and getting 1/2 my money refunded. Im sure if you have a boxster or a recent model 911 they are fine. But 914s, good luck. |

did you post at pelican for a local referal? but wait!!! might as well replace the rubber seals on the engine bay. little bit of rust, paint that. no paint the whole bay. enjoy, let things get a little out of hand. the $500, and i'll bet it's more, you save, sure buy's lots of cool stuff. you can do it yourself. if i would have had to pay someone do the work i've done, i wouldn't bother to own one, or be able to afford it.

My first 914 repair project was replacing a clutch.
Bought a hanes manual, craftsman wrench and socket set, 2 jack stands, floor jack and alignment tool. Took me a couple of evenings. But for what I saved, I more than paid for my tools. |

Reading this thread (while catching up on some long overdue ... well.. Catching up) I began to wonder if it might be worth compiling a list of "Known" mechanics that not only work on, but know, love and care for 914's.
I am all for the DIY way, but there are some things that I just would NOT tackle myself. When those things pop up, I don't want to put my baby in the hands of someone who is not a KNOWN quantity. Plus, I like to travel and wanna take the Teener with me when I do (and have no choice right now as its my every-day car)... When on road trips it would be good to know if you're anywhere near a Tried and Tested Teener Doctor! Maybe this suggestion would be better placed in the feature request forumn.. I'll put it over there and see what response I get. Later Doug |
