My first two cars were 510s. I NEVER wanted those butt fuggly inefficeint non functional mirrors on either of them.
I get the period style. But don't go there unless you only want it for the points. Not that I care or have an opinion. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) |

LOL. Glad you aren't offended by mine. Or at least I hope you aren't.
It was an era thing for sure, and I love 510s more than most around here. But putting mirrors that far forward is only good for those who like that look. Which I will respect if you tell me they work as well as... Never mind. They don't. There are reasons for modern mirror locations. But, I'll never deny the cool vintage factor. ....opinions are welcome too.... My first two cars were 510s. I NEVER wanted those butt fuggly inefficeint non functional mirrors on either of them. My 1967 911-S had these for both fenders although only the drivers side had one mounted. Made by Talbot. They do work and are good in tight spots (like racing).
The original owner was Bruce Jennings (King Carrera). I never had a problem with them. Ray Dot is another period mirror. The Carrera GT mirrors were (are) popular with the 356 crowd. |

Traffic engineers refer to the field of views or "sight cones" as they call it. |

As long as you asking for opinions, that would look awful on a 914.

I don’t think they’re Datsun per se, they were used in Japan on Z Cars and 510’s but they’re technically called Talbot mirrors.
Not sure the look works as well on a 914... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

I wouldn't be caught dead with those mirrors on my 914, especially mounted on the front fenders.
But that's me. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) So since this idea isn't sprouting legs...or pics... my second question to you would be how did the 510 driving experience stack up against the 914? Stock for stock: Driving a 510 is very like driving a 914... As long as the 914 doesn’t have sway bars from the factory... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Actually, the 914 being lower handles a bit better. You can improve the handling of the 510 dramatically with mods but mod for mod, you narrow the gap but don’t exceed the abilities of the 914. Can a 510 beat a 914 stock for stock or mod for mod? Sure. Just put the better driver in the 510. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) The attraction I think is that the 510 seems a bit more rare now that they’ve mostly been killed off. |

Back in the day, the 510 was often called a poor man's BMW, for it's surprisingly excellent handling capability. Sadly, most have now returned to the earth as ferrous-oxide.
As to those mirrors... on any car, actually... the first time I needed to adjust them alone, I'd probably end up using a baseball bat. |

period correct - yes
- on japanese cars they were then required by law, and also in some euro countries if you race your 914 you will understand why they are extremely useful - you don't have to turn your head to see overtaking traffic (oem door mirrors are useless!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) you see Raydyots on many Brit cars, and they are well received concours items in those circles - extensively repro'd & Talbot 300's are considered correct on period Cobras - you'll a lot of these at vintage racing Talbot here on a '68 911 at RRV Porsche factory display . Talbot here on my car at WSIR - i leave 'em off unless on track, cuz yes they are ugly on street, especially if one also has door mirrors - (concours judges always go apoplectic over the mount holes unless i remember to plug 'em before they see the car) a set of orig'l chrome-on-brass Talbots is worth a good bit, fyi (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) |

I had a set on my 1952 Jaguar XK120 when I bought back in “68”, kinda thought they looked good in the day all though absolutely worthless for driving. I think they would be a terrible but ugly mistake on 914!
