What is the original tire size on 14" five lug Fuchs ?
I have the original spare 175 SR 14 Is that right?
Also what happened to the tire calculator on the site?

IIRC, 185-14 was the standard size. Likely equates to a 185/80-14.. but no one seems to make those.. so a 185/70-14 might be close.. or a 195/70-14 in terms of overall diameter. Spare would have been the same size. Dealers could have swapped out anything. Nearly 50 year old tire might not be original.

I currently run 195/60-14s on mine. 60 series softness, but smaller overall diameter for a (small) boost in acceleration.

A 195/70 is a bit taller than original, and 195/60 is a bit short. 195/65-14 would be just about perfect. Tire Rack shows a Vredstein Sporttrack 5 available in that size.

The 14 inch wheels have a favorable offset
(Closest porsche offset to a 7R)

I’ve always theorized that the chassis was originally designed around this wheel)

Because of this offset you can get away with wider tires if you want
I ran 215/14 for years on mine and they came off of a friends original 6 which ran the same tires on stock fenders

Still have the original spare from my one owner -6. Size is 185x14 NOT 185x70x14. Currently running 205x70x14, which is about the same od.

Here's one of many tire size calculators on the net.

The original 185 80 14 had a diameter of 25.7"

Mentioned in this thread as alternatives...

185 70 14 24.3"

195 70 14 24.7"

195 60 14 23.2"

195 65 14 24.0"

205 70 14 25.3"


IMHO, non of these would keep the speedometer close to accurate with the exception of the 205 70 14, and since some are up to 2" shorter than the stock ones, they may look goofy in the fender wells. (You may have goals other than a stock speedometer and stock look, however)

A 195 75 14 comes the closest to stock diameter at 25.5". Tough to find any sort of performance tire in this size, however...

The 914 is running 205/60/R14 now..They were installed on it 1994..
I am thinking either 195/65/14 or 205/70/14 I am leaning to the 205's
What do you think would be the best choice? Thanks for all the reply's.
What would we do with out each other..

fwiw, my dad ran, back in the day on 14s, either 195/70 or 205/70 depending on what was available - usually Michelin XWX. Those were high performance tires for the bulk of the 1970s. Available these days from Coker Tires for about $300ea.

Nowadays, there are no performance 70 series tires. Comes down, quite simply, to how you plan on using the car and the appearance you want to keep.

Anything would be better than 25 year old tires though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Wheels, Tires, Stance, Ride Height...are major personal preferences. The two options you are considering are quite different. I think you have to decide what "look" you are after, then ask the group how best to achieve that look. Maybe post a few pictures from the internet that represent what you are after.

I like the stance and ride height of my "6" with the 205/30/14's but the speedo is way off and the RPM's too..Like I said in a earlier post the tires were put on by the previous owner in 1994.. I still got the original spare tire witch is 175/SR/14,The closes match is 195/70/14 The tire will look more bulky but will correct the speedo and the RPM's too..
I wanted a set of Gas Burners to get to 15" tires but they are hard to find.. Thanks To everyone for all the reply's and interest..
