Done a lot of reading on old threads here and have found that sizes for the bolts on the bottom of the rocker covers are 6MM X 12 (or 16 mm long) and the two screws in the fender well are #8X3/4 - but I can't find reference for a sheet metal screw size if you switch from rivets across the top...

Use the rivets. I used pop rivets. The standard aluminum ones. Wrong color of course so I colored them with a magic marker. Looks good.

I did two 914's at work and had some problems. One, holes sizes all over the place.....two fiberglass rocker will crack out using rivets. One of the cars and mine at home I used the black screws that have a collar around them. Looks a little bigger but works really well. Not sure of the size, will have to buy a few and test. Best, Mark

I got several sizes of metal screws and used the ones that fit. #6 or #8, 3/8 inch. As long as the head doesn't interfere with the door you'll be ok. You can file down the head if too tall. I don't like the rivets as it makes it difficult to remove the rocker panels for quick clean outs. The 914 was a low budget car thus pop rivet the rockers and weld on the muffler heat shield.

too many have wallowed out the rivet holes in the top unfortunately necessitating larger rivets or screws, use the factory plastic rivets like previously stated if you can

Good info/input here - i was thinking screws for quick/easy cleanouts like @Spoke mentioned (and I don't have a rivet tool....) but maybe I'll get the rockers off and see what's underneath and the condition of the rivet holes and see what's what....

Put new metal rocker panels on the car. Forgot to drill out the holes prior to painting them. Marked where the drill holes are suppose to go. Then decided to see if it actually needed to be plastic riveted (exactly how strong are the plastic rivets anyway?).

So far so good. It looks like those plastic rivets aren't needed after all.

Does anyone have any experience not using fasteners in the top of the rocker panels?

Getting things together to take off the rockers and see what's what under there and make sure things are clean etc. - I have the rocker kit/rivets coming from @Mikey914 - suggestions on what rivet tool to get. I have no clue on this one.....

What gun do/did you use for the plastic rivets? I got some plastic rivets a few years ago and the stem seemed to be to short for any of my rivet guns and also to thin to grab.

Most of them are meant to be driven in to expand the fingers and not pulled out. Short pin is a sign that it goes into the rivet and expands the fingers.

I've got plastic rivets at the top and M6 screws on the bottom. Makes it nice and easy to remover the rockers when needed.
