Thanks, everyone. That might have been the shortest test drive ever.

I put the engine lid back on, and adjusted it to be as forward as possible.

Clearance between the engine and trunk lids is better.

And did one more test in the latch, to make sure it will open.

First attempt, with the pin installed. Good news: it latches. Better news: it opens.
But the level of the closed lid is too high. Attached thumbnail(s) |

I took the pin off, and adjusted the exposed length to be shorter.

After two attempts, I have the height where I want it.

So then I tried putting the roof into the trunk with the lid on. It fits into the clips and rubber latches and looks good.

The rubber latches are already as far down as the stock adjustment allows.

So I removed the latches, put the roof in, and the lid closes. The roof was sitting on the metal brackets that hold the latches, and the roof corners still had clearance above the tail light bodies.

That means the latches have to sit about 3/16" lower, as shown here.

Do you have the top pushed all the way forward into the white clips up front?

Trigger warning: purists might not want to look!
Step one: elongate the latch bolt holes. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Step 2: modify the brackets so there is clearance between the notch for the roof edge and the top of the brackets.

Here's my initial mod. I will neaten this up and make a couple of spot welds.

This has the same problem as the 914 World badge: the 5mm studs are too thick for the stock grill holes. And the stud spacing is not quite right.

So I did some drilling and filing, and then stuck some 4mm studs into the holes with JB weld.
