Today I had a quick look at the wheels I have in storage that came on my car when I bought it 34 years ago. I was in a rush but tried to see if there were any markings on them. I thought I'd see an ET code or something like that but I didn't see anything. It's possible some markings will appear after I wash them off but I didn't have time for that and didn't feel anything by checking with my fingers. Based on the pics below, is it possible to tell if they are 914 wheels (rather than wheels from some other VW)?

Any VW wheel should have a stamped logo on it regardless of size.

Next time I'm on the farm I can take a damp rag and clean the dust/dirt off. Where would the identifying marks be on this style of wheels?

They look very much like original steelies. The width should be stamped either 4.5 or 5.5x15

Thanks. Is there a standard part of the wheel that would have the size stamp? I think I read somewhere that 914 Steelies were 5.5” wide, correct?

The standard stock rims were 4.5" and the upgrade option size was 5.5" in width.

They're stamped on the raised areas between the lugs, the vw logo, the width and diameter, the month year, and an offset which is the "ET" number, Einpress Tiefe.

I have checked the markings on the wheels. They all have the same markings, including the spare. They are the upgrade 5.5" wheels. The date is 9/72 which is consistent with the chassis, which is from 8/72. The third marking is the VW logo. However, the 4th marking is different from the wheel that @nathanxnathan posted. Specifically, there is no offset. Instead there is kind of a T marking. In his pic that T looks to be beside the VW logo. On mine it's on a separate 'petal' of the wheel where the offset would be on his. Pics attached below. Based on this info, can I be confident these are the original wheels to the car?

I suggest that those are indeed the wheels original to your teener. A good clean up and some silver paint and you're in business!

They look like the stock wheels from our 73 1.7 ... we had them powder coated and then found hubcaps.

Thanks, guys. I’ll need to get them straightened, and then will media blast followed by Wurth silver and clear. Funny you mention the hub caps; they didn’t come with the wheels when I bought the car. I know they are like the VW ones but without the logo. Where’s best place to get replacements (I’m guessing that buying new condition-if available-will be less expensive than buying used and getting them rechromed)?

I think the hubcaps are from an earlier 914, but bought them from eBay a few years back.

Hmmmm...well that raises another question then....were there differences in steelie hubcaps across years for the 914?

I don't recall seeing any other style of original hubcaps, but there have been "baby moons" and a few other aftermarket types around.

@Jett Thanks for the links. Cool that you have family here. If you're ever up here for a visit in the summer (only time the weather allows me to work on the car; in storage in a remote location the rest of the time) let me know and you're welcome to stop by and check it out.
