I'm sure this will get the New Years Day blood pumping for everyone.
Same-same build, only difference is engine sourcing a 3.2L 911 engine vs 3.6L Outback, how does the market value these respectively? I'd expect a premium for the 3.2L engine but how much? Note - don't get your knickers all in a bunch, just seems like an interesting topic of discussion.... Happy New Year all! |

The porsche flat six is just worth more.. That's why the suby conversion is cheaper.. It allows great performance and much lower cost.. This also translates to resale of the cars. Conversion 914-6 porsche powered command very high dollars typically compared to their suby powered cousins..

I think its hard to get around the charm and nostalgia of a air coold /6
Not that a suby six doesn't have charm But its not the same howling banshee That a 3.2 would be .... And once you start pumping water . And jamming radiators into 914 s Complexity is not your friend vs a aircooled /6 where Simplicity is your friend |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) If it’s not a real six, from my experience, the value is the sum of the parts, whether it’s a Porsche six, LS motor or Subi motor. I’ve yet to see a conversion sell for more than what the owner has in it. Since a Porsche motor and 915 trans is worth more, the build is worth more. Not saying it’s better.. I am a fan of all three. I bet... at some point in time, a tasteful (Porsche) six conversion will be worth more than the some of the parts. I personally have not seen it yet. |

Yep. The P6 will bring more $$$ when you sell. Until then it will take more $$$ to own. The matter of open market value only comes into the debate if you ever plan on selling. Find someone with a well done conversion and ask them if they'd ever consider swapping out for a P6! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Value will also be determined by the quality of the conversion. Because the air cooled swap is more straightforward, and there are aftermarket parts available to facilitate the installation, buyers will have fewer concerns. Each Subby conversion is a one off creation that introduces a lot of uncertainties.

ALL IN I imagine $30k for the P drivetrain swap? It’s probably a good idea to budget $25-30 and celebrate if it’s less. My first 3.2 cost me $4,500, 2nd was $8k and now they are hard to find for under $12k. Smaller engines can cost less and not need all the extras like oil coolers and conversion clutches and flywheels. Add in $10k for a properly converted 915 trans. Add in $10k for a shop to do the conversion. These cars and conversations are like a vacation. It’s all about enjoying the trip and not trying to find or rationalize monetary value. |

I bought a 914 with the plan to do a six conversion or a subi swap. After doing a lot of research which has already been covered above, I was lucky enough to find a 3.2 conversion already done for way under market because the interior was incomplete. If you can find either a P6 or subiswap already done under market then that's an option as well.
Another option is the turbo 4. With an air to water intercooler you can get over 400hp, but those conversions are not much cheaper than the P6. The v8's are a little too hardcore for me. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) 2 wonderfully done cars at that @coondog and @steve I have a bunch less in my conversion as I find that I am able to do allot of trades that work out mutually favorable.. This has saved me a good amount of money.. That said my conversion is not done and I am over 4 years in.. Though had major rust repair as well. |

Keeping it all Porsche has a premium attached. A quality conversion using real 6 parts even more so. However with the price of a solid conversion, I would think an owner would be lucky to get more than the conversion costs if professionally done.
If you can believe the Porsche mags, 914 values are creeping up as early 911 values become unaffordable. I would think conversion cars would also benefit to some extent. Just speculating. |

BAT is a good measure of what our conversions are going for. I have not seen one sell yet for more than what they have into it. I think the time will come.....
