I'm changing out my flywheel and would like to know if it really is necessary to replace the mounting bolts. I know that some bolts are supposed to stretch when torqued down and are considered as one time use. But the flywheel mounting bolts don't seem to be that type, so can they safely be re-used? Should Locktite be used on them if new or re-used?

No, you don't need to change them out. It is recommended but few rarely do. Yes, use Locktite on them.

Bolts can probably be reused, but be sure to replace the locking plate/disc (PN 021105275).

I changed out mine...but only because I figured after 45 years it couldn't hurt. The old bolts looked fine though. I think a new locking plate is more critical. You can see the scratches in the plate dug in by the bolts in my clutch replacement video...

I guess I'd rather spend a few extra bucks to change them out and do it correctly than second guess the factory recommendations.
I installed new bolts when I changed the clutch on my Boxster. TBH I'm not sure if it's recommended for the 914, but if so then I would buy new bolts and install them correctly |

Steve A- Yes they can be reused. Also besides the locking plate replace the RMS, flywheel o-ring, felt washer and pilot bearing. |
