I was very pleased with the fit on the driver's side when compared:

So starting at the center alignment mark, I tack welded it about every four inces toward the front of the car. Added additional tacks in the portions of the sharp curves to keep the alignment and not make any stress points or bends.

After completing the front half I made sure the bottom of the new fender lined up with the old fender portion where the brace is and clamped it in place. This will all be trimmed to match after the entire fender is tacked in.

Then I repeated the process from the center match point moving to the rear of the new fender.

The alignment was spot on at the rear. I leave the channel from the old fender in place where the rocker panel used to mount at the front and will use it to mount the new flared rocker panel.

Here is a pic with the entire fender tacked in place. I started to finish the welding when for some reason my good old, and I do mean old, Craftsman welder decided to take a dump... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) So I guess I'll be getting a new welder for Christmas before I can do any more with the fender(s). Since I am done for the day I guess I will go drink a beer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif)

Looking good.
I also started with a Craftsman MIG, about 30 years ago. Eventually it quit, and I replaced it with a Hobart. |

Well I got the new welder ordered (Merry Christmas to me) but since body work is pretty much on hold until it gets here, I decided to clean up some engine tin today.

After completing the front half I made sure the bottom of the new fender lined up with the old fender portion where the brace is and clamped it in place. This will all be trimmed to match after the entire fender is tacked in. On my brothers 914 I ended up trimming both the flare bottom and bottom of the factory fender. Butt welded them together. |

Luke, that is pretty much what I have done as well. Since my welder took a crap yesterday I was sulking so didn't get to that part. When the new welder gets here I guess I'll have to post the finish....lol. |

So, of course boys with new toys have to try them out right away. I must say it is night and day difference from my old craftsman. In no time at all I had the fender welded up the rest of the way. The welds are much nicer and easier to control, so allot less grinding and finishing.

Here is the rear portion of the fender flare where I blended it into the channel at the bottom where the rocker panel bolts in, just a little clean up grinding to finish it up.

And here is the front where I joined it to the support, leaving just a small portion of the original fender to insure a strong joint.

According to the factory diagram there was an allowance of 1/4 inch in placement, from side to side. I guess measuring 50 times before cutting paid off, as my measurements had less than 1/16 of an inch varience...very happy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Today I decided to balance the car and install the 4th and final fender flare. So again measure and tweek the fit about twenty times till I like the fit so I can cut the gaping hole. In the first photo you can see the original fender underneath. In the second you can see that the fit is a bit off, will have to make adjustments once the original fender is cut.

And with the cut out marked, its time to cut that gaping hole....This part always makes me nervous. Even after measuring and checking the fit 20 times I am always afraid I have missed something.
