Can the switch be disassembled ?

Rory...The key/tumbler and male connectors on the ignition switch all check out as working properly. The funky behavior seems to be in the female ignition switch connector and downstream wiring. The connector does come apart. It is just a simple, multi-pin female connector that is part of the wiring harness.

What is baffling me is that prior to cranking the engine over with both the fuel pump and the twin MSD ignition connected, everything was working fine. Headlights, high beams, turn signals flasher, wipers, fuel pump, spark, starter, etc. The engine started and ran for about 10 sec before I shut it off to have lunch. Then, when I tried to restart, it quit after several rotations of cranking and nothing worked on the dash.

I think I have finally sorted my first start electrical problem. I did check out the ignition switch thoroughly and found no issues there. The problem was a weak ground at the battery ground strap. I replaced the ground strap and re-charged the battery and now all the electricals on the dash and lights work as they did before. The engine cranks over nicely with the MSD ignition disconnected and I am now ready for engine start up this week.

I fired up the engine for the first time for a 20 min break in run at 2000 RPM. It fired right up and ran smoothly.

Still a troublesome oil leak near the LHS cam housing that I need to chase down.

The car will then go to Auto Associates for some finishing touches.

I just went thru the entire post and
I am more than impressed. Jim Newton did the strip and repaint on our 73 911 back in 1988. We finally parted with it in 2019 and the finish was as it was when I took it home 31 years earlier. I don’t think there is anyone better on east coast. It’s going to be a beauty! Also, with that motor, it’s going to be a hoot!

I tried to make it public. Usually, my grandson does this for me. Hope it works now.

Hi Charlie

Yes. This is my 3rd project with Auto Associates. My '73 RSR tribute car still looks and runs great after 23 years.

They also worked with me on the concourse restoration of this 1970 911E.

Their work is top notch and reliable. With their help, I hope to have the 914 on the road next spring/summer.

The '70E was restored to it's original Bahia Red. It was sold 2 years ago on BAT

Not a lot of progress over the Holidays. I re-did the GT head light cables with bicycle derailer cables. Much smoother operation as compared to the hood release wires I had initially installed. Thanks to Mark Epstein for the tip.

I also installed the GT engine release cable and handle.

The car is now off to Auto Associates for the finishing work and completion.
