Thx Brent, I'll call them. I destroyed the old one in 2009. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

I just emailed them and attached a picture of my old sticker and they made the replacement. Great people to work with. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) @76-914 Another vote for Carbone, they're really well done with the little security circles down the whole sticker--when I had mine done they sent a silver and a black version, both stamped and ready to go! Commenting on this thread just to find it again. I’m in the midst of this debate right now. I’ve sanded around the door tag, which is in fantastic condition… but I’m worried that stepping the layers won’t be enough to disguise the repaint.
So, if an exact replica door tag can be bought, that would be the best solution. Anyone have pictures to share? |

The Car-bone stickers -- Note to everyone, they don't display/list them on the site, just email and they'll respond, they even send you a preview to approve before it prints! Couple things set theirs apart for me, the shape of the numbers like the 7's for example, also note that it has the circle security stippling across the entire body of it, so it looks totally correct like the originals (the black one is in the plastic bag): |

@eric9144
Awesome! What about the gloss finish on the black sticker? The factory one has a distinct gloss to it it seems. |

Got replacements for me and Big Len (saved extra shipping) and couldn’t be happier. |

Carbone said they can’t do it… I don’t know what you two did, ut you clearly ruined it for the rest of us! can i make a suggestion. if your original is still in good shape. rather than working right up to the edge of it with new paint, which i agree you can't actually pull off, instead create a deliberate zone further away. use the old bend back the masking tape and feather the paint in to a zone surrounding it. then fine sand, cut and polishe etc and merge the two paint colors together. i am an originality freak. if i had a good vin sticker i would try to figure out how to retain it. i know mike who does all of our painting here would be able to pull it off. we never completely repainted the falcon ute and he managed to blend some areas of paint pretty amazingly. we used the old bend back the masking tape and paper trick. admit it might be hard to do the masking for that in that area. i would have to think about it. perhaps even create a deliberate zone that is kept away from the original sticker and you just that as a restoration method rather than trying to fake it up as if it was factory. take the attitude of a well thought out restoration method. its an idea. i looked on auto atlanta web site and the dr. has some vin stickers. but they don't appear to be exactly correct for the 74 cars. our vin stickers have Type Passenger Car as the top line on the sticker. this doesn't seem to be the case with the AA repros. possibly an earlier style of Vin sticker from 73s ore something even earlier. |

remove it carefully to preserve then get a new repro that is punched. That way you get a nice paint flow without roughly taping off an old sticker Doing a complete paint job. Should I preserve the original sticker or replace? Where should I get the replacement? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) If at all possible keep the original on. Get a really good repro as a spare or if the original just can’t be saved. Those little tear holes are really good at preventing the sticker from being peeled off (intentionally I would think). |

@wonkipop that was the original plan, but after looking at the chips around the sticker, I realized that layering wasn’t going to work.
The rest of you, go peel your 50yr old door sticker off, and show me two things: 1) you can get it off flawlessly, 2) you can make it stick again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/slap.gif) Attached thumbnail(s) |

Here it is. Definitely not flawless. Not sure if that’s even possible with the cutout holes; that’s why I got the repro. Original, though.

Yeah, that’s actually a pretty solid effort. But if I’m gonna spend money on this I want it to look right.

+1 for Carbone. I destroyed mine taking it off. The new one doesn't feel flimsy and looks really nice.

@Van B
here is mine. OG factory. its in pretty good nick. yes it is glossy. it has all the circles in it but i would have to take photo out in sunlight for them to be visible. thing is @dr914 @autoatlanta.com has a pretty good repro, but the one on his website listed is not quite exact for a 74. you can see the 74 has TYPE PASSENGER CAR as the separate top line. you could email him and ask if he has this correct one for our 74s or perhaps he will come back and comment to clarify what he has in stock. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) pity about carbone. i wonder who cracked down on them over the stickers. it cannot have been porsche as VW also used these stickers. or was it porsche. interesting anyway that copyrght is being enacted on something that is now 50 years ago. i wonder if copyright holds that long. i did not think it did. i'm wondering if it is porsche and carbone are getting a bit confused because our vin stickers have no mention of porsche on them. its a VW vin sticker. the bit that it is possible that porsche could enact copyrght on is the Dr. Ing Porsche etc part that is on the 911 vin stickers. |
