Nice family history on the car. Find yourself a good mechanic that is familiar with these cars. Getting your oil changed at Pep Boys makes me cringe. Over torquing the bolt on the oil sump screen or striping the drain plug bolt is a nightmare waiting to happen, remember the case is aluminum. Young mechanics graduating vocational schools today have no idea what a set of points or a condenser is!

Greetings and welcome. Tons of info available here using the search function. This link usually makes it easier: http://tiny.cc/wqt0wz

And as Ian said above - watch his videos. They're really well done and even if you're not looking to do a specific procedure, it's just good general knowledge.

Sorry for you and your spouse's loss. I'm glad you have stewardship of his car. Sounds like it was special to him.

I have no experience with PorBoys, but if you need someone closer to home I'd recommend Eason Auto. If I run into something I can't handle myself that's where I go.

I'll add some better pictures when I have the chance to really get in to it, but hopefully here's a good start.

Nice! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

It looks like you are way ahead in the game. Maintenance rather than restoration.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Glad the car has a special place in the family. Looks like a great car. The body color bumpers, sail panel and targa bar give it a distinctive appearance and hint at its euro spec legacy. The yellow painted engine tin is a nice touch. Old school for sure. Learn as much as you can because you're going to get lots of questions. You'll have a blast with it!

It has been a minute since I made my first post sharing our 914... after several months of awesome driving, getting to know the car and finding the gremlins, I took it in for service at PorBoys. Joe Zeiph (owner) was awesome, remembered the car, and remembered my father-in-law. I got the down-low on what was done to the car when it was refinished...

The dual carburetors are Weber 40's. The heads were not replaced as I had thought, so it is still a 1.7L engine; but it was changed out to hydraulic lifters. I had it tuned up and the brakes flushed, and it runs better than I could have ever imagined. I drove it the 30 or so miles home from Pacheco to Pleasanton, and aside from being terrified of the other drivers on the 680 not paying attention, it did amazing.

Now on to the bigger issue, the transmission... We are looking to upgrade that... Any advice on a reputable source and the right questions to ask would be appreciated.

Talk to Dr Evil for all transaxle questions. @Dr_Evil

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Hey dude. Unless you are missing a gear, clutch adjustment and bushings usually
take care of most issues. Here is a link: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=109708 This is a tail shifter (which you have in a 71) tutorial for bushing replacement. A short shift kit is available for your shifter that will shorten up the throw necessary to shift. Shy of switching to a side shifter, that is about it with a tail shifter. It's like stirring a pot of stew. Mine is a 72 and I am going with a side shifter, been stirring stew for 40 years. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Oh and looking for info is easier here if you go to google, put in 914world.com and your question. It will give you all the options here. Have fun

When I first got mine, which was a 1.7L I bought and installed this to make it a 1.9L.
You do have to have the heads flycut to fit the jugs but no work on the bottom end. Easy job, and it sure ran better.
