My dad did when he had his 356. I never tried it but previously had used amsoil but always kind of wasted it because I would dump the oil after only a few thousand miles each year. So now looking for a cheaper alternative that I still dump with a few thousand miles on it

And to stir the pot a little more.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif)

I have a 5qt jug of VR1 that I've used about a quart from. Just ordered a 5qt Castrol Classic. Any issue with mixing them on the next -6 oil change?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

No issue at all

That's what my dad always said, before he put in whatever oil was handy. Brand and weight did not matter much to him. He looked at cars and trucks mostly as tools. And he was cheap.

I don't get it Ben. Your a top shelf welder fabricator, $75,000 914-6 GT Tribute and you want to save $100 on a oil change. I would put in the best you can and drive it more.....friend, Mark

I just feel like I waste the oil because I change it often and with really low mileage on each oil change.

$100 for an oil change is a lot cheaper than rebuilding an engine at 75-100,000 miles. Hell, 10 years of oil changes once a year is $1,000 vs 8-10 grand to rebuild an engine. Don't skip on the oil!

Cheaper high zinc oils still costs $100 ish. I use high quality filters, drive about 1000 miles per year and change the oil once a year so over thinking it on my end. It’s getting a second change this year as tuning this year it burned extra rich early on in the process so need to change that oil out. I may ditch the Mahle filter for a MANN filter this go around after some recent threads

Bottom line - you’re guessing and making assumptions. $35 for an oil analysis gets you real data on fuel and moisture contamination (if any) plus info on metals contamination. With that data and a baseline, you can make intelligent decisions rather than just dumping oil for the sake of it.

Otherwise it’s all voodoo religion / oil mythology much of which is no longer relevant with modern oil stock and additive packages.

Just sayin’ (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Looks good EXCEPT for the DORMAN part!
I don't use Dorman if it has moving parts or electronics...
Some of their "Fix It" setups are world class.
Their electrical crap is Chinese!

After you spend money AND have pissed off customers you stop using Chinese stuff...

Chinese parts have cost me OVER 10K during the pandemic as I could NOT buy OEM.

Very true. The one thing I can say is that after building hundreds of engines over the years the constant denominators in engine failure was dirty oil and dirty air into the Intakes. Changing oils with good frequency is better than running 10k on a change. I do appreciate all the opinions and I knew what I was in for when I started it.

I was wondering what thoughts were on Walmart's (yeah Walmart!) Super Tech 'heavy duty' 15W-40 ? It's made for both gasoline and diesel engine and lists zinc at 1298 / phosphorus 1169.

Sorry, I'm realizing that my question is just gonna muddy up your original enquiry - as you specified 3 particular oils. And I hate when others do similar when I'm being specific. I'll post elsewhere or start a new thread.

Mobil 1 euro at Walmart 28 dollars. 5.60 a quart. Vr1 may be worth a 1.20 more. I kinda like Mobil 1 but for no good reason.

I talked to a local engine builder, he recommended staying away from synthetic for the flat six, says they were designed for Dino Oil. I did notice on my fresh motor my max hot oil pressure was a bit lower when I tried mobil 1, I'm using VR1 and like it so far cheaper in the 5 qt jug. I also tried Penn Grade once, just seemed very thick and expensive, car ran a little hotter too; I think the engine builder was fond of Penn Grade and VR1.

This reminds be of the old Chevron Delo 400 oil which was good stuff, no longer made (they make a SE version now I think).
