I recently picked up a 911 mechanical fuel injection, air cleaner assembly . I was hoping I could use this with the carburetor Air cleaner base unit I already have. I was wrong once again. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to make this set up work? I have no problem making custom clips to attach to. Has anybody modified a plastic air cleaner to work with Zenith air cleaner base mounts.

So you have an MFI top as you know and carb bases. I went through this a bunch of times and to be honest I even had to modify my steel one to clear everything but I don’t have to worry about that starting on fire like a plastic one just food for thought

Hey Matt
Don't modify anything yet.
I have a plastic AF housing, Weber boats and a 2.2E MFI unit.
Let me see if they cooperate.

I just re-red your post and hope this helps
MFI boats have different clips and a taller flange on the inner edge of the rubber seal
If you trim the flange even with the top edge of the seal and change the clips I think you'll be in business.
See the pics.
Be carefull with the wire clips, there ar two versions. You'll need the larger ones

I have done a dozen of these combos and I have never been able to get a good fit up with that mismatch setup

Did MFI air filters have the enrichment spray parts ?
914 6 air filters did.
Your snorkel is for a 911
Are the wing nuts plastic ?
Fires in the plastic housings were caused by a faulty enrichment system, faulty carbs and faulty maintenance, not by the housing itself.
Matt your housing is melted in the round openings for each stack. That's not unusual.
Are the mating surfaces flat ?
What carburators are you using ?
Added pics of a plastic MFI housing.

And one more.
I hope this helps.
And congratulations, that's a 914 6 housing.

Thanks,
I kind of was wondering if it was from a six. I saw the spray bar holes also.
This part will go on a factory six with Webers, after carbs have been set and tested.

I would suggest that you get an early steel airbox that is designed to work with the Zenith carbs.

Something like this one

Post a WTB ad on Pelican or Early 911S Registry and see if anything turns up.

I am going through this now with a /6 conversion I have been for, well far too long. I actually found a steel air filter housing for cheap, but does not appear to be a bolt on

This might be the EZ button for my build : https://www.piercemanifolds.com/AIR_Filter_...p/pm-0314-0.htm

Originality is not my #1 priority

Tom
I am not using Zenith carbs I am using Webers. I was just using the Zenith base plates to see fitment.
I might look into the metal top, but this is #597 factory 914-6. It will get factory parts as I can find and afford them.

Hi Matt,
it looks good. Maybe it's just put together wrong. You need the long clips. I use a plastic box with carburetor/ 2,2MFI base. Cheers Dirk

Hey Matt
What doesn't fit ?
You have a 6 air filter, Zenith boats (same as Webers) and Weber carbs.
When installing the stock air filter housing in the car it is a bit of a wiggle.
Attaching the drain hose, the big vent hose and flipping a couple of the clips is
annoying.
Doesn't sound like any adaptation is necessary except for correct clips.

@rgalla9146
Thanks for your help. I can not find part numbers for the longer clips.
Any idea what models used the metal bases and the plastic filter housing? Maybe just 9146 and the 911T of that years?

Thanks Matt
