Great price. With the GT vented choice, the caliper comes with the spacer installed. For the proper rear rotor, I'm reading old posts saying use an SC 911 vented rear rotor but I need to machine a bit off to clear?

Yes the rotors need to be machined to reduce the diameter a bit. Had Eric at PMB do mine. Very reasonable price and quick in and out back to me.

Eric put those on Mark Sonners car in rear with the 15 inch 7r copies or deep 7s - Vented rotors on the copy of 914-6 caliper.

I asked mark to try to get a picture of the rear set up today. Great photo ( A California Utah- We Bad)

So these are being made as a repop, and are designed to work with an SC rotor, why aren’t the calipers machined so that they work with the sc rotor (the consumable part) without modification? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Maybe because these calipers are 914-6 replicas? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) 9146-GT rear calipers were 914-6 rears with a 10mm spacers. They also used a unique vented rotor that was the diameter of the /6 rotor (286mm) but 20mm wide instead. I believe this rotor is the same as the one on the 916 (part number below). 911 rear rotors are 289mm diameter so... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Below are the various rear rotor dimensions

I believe the outer half of the 914-6 rear caliper is 911 M rear caliper part, so only only the inner half is 914-6 specific.

914-4 rear rotor:
Dia: 282mm
Thk: 9.4mm

914-6 rear rotor:
Dia: 286mm
Thk: 10.5mm

914-6 GT rear rotor:
Dia: 286mm
Thk: 20mm
P/N 901-352-041-12 (same as 916)

The non GT version of the 914-6 caliper that PMB sells (it doesn't have the spacer in the middle of the caliper halves) can work with the off the shelf non vented rotor that they also sell. So that would probably be the easy upgrade for most. For those that want a vented rotor though I think it's worth the extra effort to have the outside perimeter machined down to clear.

FWIW there's an old thread on here that explains that the caliper can be moved slightly on the ears to clear the bigger diameter 911 rotor. Though I don't see how this is possible or good practice as you wouldn't want the caliper to ever shift or move. I suppose you could make offset spacer or something to lock it in the right spot.

Most shops charge a pretty minimal fee to turn down the diameter of a rotor. I pay $20 to have it done.

Correct on the # 901-352-041-12 , we have those on #40 Sonauto

Out of curiosity. I did a search online but couldn't find them available anywhere. Do you have a source in case you would need at set? They must be available somewhere... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I haven’t found them. Marty might have nos or a special source (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) but it’s so easy to have SC rotors trimmed down that I wasn’t looking that hard. From what I heard Eric say in the past, they are also quite expensive.

Those special rotors have not been NLA for a LONG TIME. When I sourced some around 2010 there was only 6 left at the factory.

I must have received my pair from you out of that purchase. Not that these are not finished inside for the drum brakes.

Our restoration shop Aase Motors in OC had a set NOS and NLA, and installed for us. He did say I got the last set he had, and he got these at the old Vasek Polak Porsche race parts dept long ago.
