I had read about the cure-all bushing to fix the steering column play. I ordered myself one and once I began digging into it and watching some youtube videos, it seems the bushing is for later cars and doesn't work in the early cars. Does repairing this play in an early car require total disassembly? Thanks for any guidance.

Do you have the metal crush sleeve in your column? |

Is the spring installed under the steering wheel? I had a wiggle in my steering wheel that bugged me. Upon removal of the steering wheel, the large spring that goes on before the wheel is installed was missing. Installed a spring (thanks Greg T.) and it is nice now. is the column chunk tightly bolted against the body? yeah, the column bolts are tight. This is the bushing I purchased. It does not appear there's any way to install this thing in my steering column assembly. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com-27823-1721994767.1.jpg) |

Thats what i've gathered. It won't work on my '70. Is there an easy fix for my car? Or whats inviolved to eliminate the steering column slop/wiggle?

Yes, there is a corrugated version of this that works for early cars. I haven't seen one of those in years though. Maybe a 911 part? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Might actually be a VW part for Bugs and Karmann Ghia (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Attached image(s) |

On 50 year old cars there is rarely an easy fix.
It isn’t that difficult to remove the column and replace bearings FWIW. |

Early 70-71 cars used the VW Type 3 variation for the steering column.72-74 came from VW Bug. 75-76 came from Early VW Rabbit.
