Turns out my 1973 wiring harness has a 1973 snorkel. Who would have thought. I just discovered, after snaking the harness through the firewall, that my 1974 chassis wants a 1974 snorkel. Another unanticipated revelation.

Anybody have one in good condition? The later model snorkels are longer and have a much larger seal on the forward end. Also, looks like 914rubber only sells the early version.

Did they quote that much? Seems high. But I received on 2-3 days after they shipped, very fast.

I might have a used one, are you interested in that?

You will also find that due to the central location of the top of the snorkel that the battery cables will likely be too short, and possibly the fuel pump wires and oil temp sender.
Each year harness is sufficiently different that there are problems trying to adapt a harness from the wrong year. Your tachometer wires will also have to be adapted

Very interesting. While refurbishing the harness, I made a bunch of modifications:

1. Replaced the fuel pump wires with larger gauge up to the front under the fuel tank.
2. Added an oil temp wire to the dash.
3. Added an oil pressure wire to the center console.

I'm not sure about the battery cables. I'll find out soon.

How important is it that the snorkel is complete. I tore the crap out of mine trying to thread it onto the harness. The two end grommets are in good shape but the tube between them is torn in half.

I've never tried to install a snorkel on a complete harness; and I have never seen a 50 year old snorkel in good shape. Even on a 50 year old NOS harness the snorkel was crumbling. You do need a new snorkel for a 1974. I insert a plastic sleeve inside the snorkel before pulling the wires through; it is as big as can be fitted through the ends:

I ordered a new late model snorkel from Kroon. My plan is to disassemble the harness and snake each wire through separately. I removed the harness from the car so it "should" be doable.

I would be highly inclined to replace the battery cables and fuel pump wires when you do so. The two heavy gauge wires from battery to fuse panel and ignition switch need to be about 6 inches longer, and the oil sender wire the same 6". Fuel pump positive wire is about an inch longer but I find they are usually in poor condition and I increase the gauge because I think that helps keep the pump healthy.

Thank you!

I replaced the fuel pump wires, with a heavier gauge, up to the fuel tank. I also had the access door put in so I'll be running a 1975-1976 configuration for my fuel pump.

I added the proper wire to take the oil temperature (along with the existing oil pressure) up to the dash so that I can run my combo gauge that shows oil temp and the dummy light for oil pressure. I added the necessary wire to run an oil pressure gauge in the center console.

I'll have to take a good hard look at the battery to fuse panel wires.
