I am just about to replace my rear main seal on the engine. I bought the installer tool from GoWesty and the seal is an Elring.
My question is, what's the prevailing thought on using some sort of sealer in conjunction with the rear main seal when installing it?
Will it help or hurt? Or, will it usually not have any effect at all?
I don't want this sucker coming out again. I know what I did wrong the during the first install, which is why I purchased the installer this time. Just want to see what you fold think about using the sealer too.

I'm not sure about an air-cooled motor, but when I installed that seal in my Vanagon rebuild, I found that the edges needed to be chamfered as to not tear the seal while installing.

I always put a very thin coat of silicone on the diameter of the seal.

I never have. If it built that much pressure up it
would leak at the sealing surface first.

Thanks guys, consensus seems to be that no sealant is needed.
