I know we’ve discussed this, but here’s the situation. 76 fuel injected with stock 2.0 other than Crane ignition, runs perfectly. I installed the 6v Ford relay on the starter a few years ago. Good Optima redtop battery. I have cleaned all the grounds at body and transmission. Still, after driving and shut off, it barely, if at all, turns over on immediate restarts. I thought I would just run a negative cable directly from the battery negative post to the starter to see if that helped. Questions:
Is that an appropriate possible fix? If so, what gauge cable (will make one up) should I use? Any thoughts on general optimal routing in the engine bay? Any other thought? Ty |

I ran a neg cable from the battery post to the fan shroud, fixed all my ills. You may have a failing starter but I would try the neg cable first. I kept the post to body ground as well. And the transmission ground of course. I’ll try that, ty! I like simple first. What gauge wire? You can test if that is going to help with jumper cables. Don't have to purchase anything. Bigger is better for cables. Cheap 24" battery cable (FLAPS) will work fine. You can purchase them with eyelets on both ends... |

Yep, that one is a starter cable from flaps for a lawn tractor. 4 gauge? 8 gauge? Can't remember.

This was my solution 20 years ago and it worked. try 2 or 4 AWG; remember the starter amps will be over 200 for at least a moment.

I might suggest the 50 year old starter needs lubrication..maybe a rebuild.
I ran a ground cable, 3 feet long, to the mounting bolt on the starter. |

I am not a believer in those Rubgoldberg devices. Try the Ed test. When the engine fails to start when hot, run a new set of jumper cables from the battery to the starter. Try to crank it. If you are still running 50 year old battery cables like me because they look new from the outside it is time to replace them.
