The schematic shows 2 black/blue stripe wires at 56a but I have 4??? @Geezer914 Are you referring to pin 58a? I didn't find a pin 56a on either the '74 or '75 schematics. The '74 schematic shows 4 wires on pin 58a and the '75 schematic shows only 2 wires. Any chance your 914 is wired like a '74? The 4 wires on a '74 go to: 1) Dash lights 2) Hazard light 3) Heater control lights 4) Temperature control light The 2 wires on a '75 go to: 1) Dash lights 2) ***Seem to go nowhere*** All wires are black/blue. |

@Geezer914
I quoted info from a Haynes manual for the 914. For the '75, it shows 2 wires on 58a. However on Jeff's site, the '75-'76 schematic shows 4 wires just like the '74 schematic. Not sure why the Haynes is different. Both Jeff's and Haynes look to be identically laid out except for the 2 less wires on the Haynes. |

When I turn on the headlights, the fuse blows, so I have a short somewhere. @Geezer914 Which fuse blows? It looks like fuse S7 power the rheostat and the light in the engine compartment. Might want to check that socket too. |

Seems like your only path is to pull the gauges and remove each of the lights. Then plug in a bulb… insert it into the gauge and energize the system. Work along until you find the offending item. Check each socket carefully and look for issues.
I had a situation where the hot wire inside one socket had broken loose and was grounding and blowing a fuse on my ‘72. I was able to fix it with some creative soldering. My guess would be a faulty socket some where in the chain. |

I stand corrected, 58a it is. I checked all the dash lights, all is good. It has to be one of those other wires. Will check by process of elimination. Thanks for the replies.

Dash lights are working! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) Eliminated the wire that was causing the short. Thanks to all who commented and offered their expertise. We can accomplish anything when we pool our knowledge. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I didn't trace it back to the source but it was either the heater fan switch light on the center console (which I don't have) or the temperature control lights. 1974 has 4 wires coming off the headlight rheostat while the 75 only has 2. Hazards, fog lights, and 4 way flashers all work along with headlights, parking lights, and the dash lights.

How would the license plate lights effect the dash lights? The gray wires (two of them) connect into the black/blue circuit at the fuse panel. Terminal "K" on the headlight switch feeds fuse #7, which has a gray wire and a black/blue wire connected to its output side. The black/blue goes to the dimmer, while the gray goes to the center console illumination light plug and the rear trunk and license plate lights. --DD |
