I have a 64c that I am going to start a driving restoration on. I have a good type 4 with carbs. Does anyone have any info on mounting it into the 356?

A big production to do it while ruining the value of the car. If you do not have an engine you can find a good 912 engine and install

Matt You can keep the original motor for later. `64 356c is about 74 HP. 2.0 liter 914 motor about 100 HP, more with mods (maybe even 125 to 130 HP) and reliable. That's a good enough for me. |

"ruining the value of the car" I don't have original engine. type 4 is temporary. Car value will not change and if anything, will increase due to road worthy. I plan to put a 912 engine in. Thank you. I was looking more into the clutch, flywheel, starter parts fitting. Matt years ago I did this on my 912 ,easy and worthwhile conversion. not so sure I would do it today for a bunch of reasons. in 2000 I considered doing it to my 356C as I had several engines laying around and the 356 engine had spun a main. the t4 flywheel/clutch wont fit into the transaxle without some serious grinding. and then you are faced with fabbing up some kind of starter mount. most conversions go for a 901 trans and all the associated fabrications to make that work. the car CANNOT remain stock and you won't be going back. looking back I'm really glad I didn't do it (still have the car, running very well with original engine). If you must have a temporary motor, a t1 vw is a better choice. Good luck Randy |

If someone is interested, I have a friend that just acquired a decent pile of 356 parts including anengine, some cooling shrouds, carbs etc, and set of date coded wheels, and some rare rear brakes, and some other misc, items, I know he is looking to sell all of it.

I can see the appeal of this. Given the high cost of getting a known well built 356/912 motor, going with a known TypeIV is a good alternative. Anything that gets another 356 on the road is worth it, granted you don't destroy parts of the car to make it happen.

Could you have a flywheel made to fit and utilize the stock T/O bearing and starter?
The flywheels were 180 or 200mm, have one made that bolts to the t4, but with the 356-912 ring gear and clutch/pressure plate. |

This kit allows you to put a 901 into a 356B or C. If you don't use the 356 style clutch assembly, you can use a Type IV engine on it.
