QUOTE(NARP74 @ Nov 15 2024, 08:18 AM) *

Was the front strut tower brace added due to extra fuel weight? Does it have real world street performance gains?

@NARP74
No and no.

The brace was added because the 100L fuel tank requires you to cut out the factory brace (which normally also doubles as a wall between the front trunk and the gas tank chamber).

I'm not a GT expert, how can you tell? By VIN?

Yes, factory built GT's are well known and documented. They also have an internal Porsche project number. There aren't many of those.

Dealer / Team built ones using genuine Porsche competition parts are next down the list. This is what we have here in this thread.

If you filter our VIN database by the "GTs - Factory/Dealer/m471" filter, you'll see a list of those and the factory GT's are called out as such, including their project number.

After checking closer, I found several things that I would have done differently, but it’s still a cool car.

I’ve had a front row seat to the restoration of this car for the past six years. The car has many many very rare bits - real RSR calipers, oil system, engine has full RSR internals, Bernie even has a set of OEM slide valves he was hoping to use if he can locate the proper 908 style shroud. The hood and deck are original factory items with the signature from Porsche factory folks still on the inside.

As Porsche provided the kits to dealers as a means of reaching the homologation numbers required for the car to meet FIA requirements, I call this a real GT, just not one of the few factory builds, but a Stoddard bodied GT. Bernie has the FIA paperwork registered for the car, enabling it to be campaigned in officially sanctioned races. It’s not a tribute either though Bernie has built several for various customers. ( Fun fact - he also built and prepared Bruce McCaw’s winning 917, which McCaw successfully won Laguna Seca that year).

I’ve had a seat as a passenger in this for its maiden outing and never have I lusted after a car as badly as I lust after this one. If you can make the Seattle auto show this weekend, it’s worth seeing the car.

Though not applicable to this car, did factory GT's have the flares added or were the fenders stamped with the flares?

I saw the 'Rally prep for 914' video posted recently and was surprised at how poorly the flares were installed. Were the factory GT's installed in the same manner, lap welded and leaded, if at all?
