So today I finally got the engine and transmission out of the car with the help of my son. The plan is to have the engine & tranny out to do some work including but not limited to: tranny reseal, pushrod seals replacement, valves adjustment, and whatever we find while working on the engine & tranny. So after just a few minutes of dismantling my son pointed some oily residue on Cyl. #3 & #4. Not sure where this could come from but our first thought would be to look at the oil cooler for leaks. Are we on the right track or we should look elsewhere. Cyl.#1 & #2 did not show any signs or similar residue.

Clean residue off with brake cleaner . . . Monitor.

Cylinder base gaskets always struggle to seal to some degree. What people don’t realize is that clamp load on the cylinders and head studs goes up as the engine warms. The aluminum head is expanding much faster than the steel cylinders and steel studs.

More potential for minor leakage and crankcase pressure blow by when engine is initially cold and has less clamp load on the cylinders.

Nothing major but it can result in what you see. How do they look underneath? Bottom side is usually worse.
